How much stronger is the 205 vs the 241? I'm doing a 6.0l swap and am planning on swapping out the 700r4 for a 4l80. I'd have to buy a 27 spline adapter for 40 bucks to make the 241 work but now I'm wondering if a 205 would be a better option. The 241 is damn near new and I'm not sure what I could sell it for but I'd guess 300. I could probably get a 205 for 100 (in need of a rebuild) and rebuild it but what kind of cost would I be looking at?

I've pulled my 241 apart numerous times and I'm not afraid of a rebuild but do I really need a 205?

I'm gonna be running 35's with 350 hp and 380 ft lbs from a 6.0l. Will the 241 live or is it borderline? I have 10b's front and rear right now but I'm planning on a 14b and maybe a 60. I'd like to take tq management off the 6.0l and not kill drivetrain... will the 241 be ok or should I go 205? I know it depends on driving style but the stronger my drivetrain gets, the heavier my right foot becomes.

So my question is should I go 205? Do I need it or is it bragging rights? If so what should I expect to pay for a 205 assuming I do the rebuild?

thinking about buying a old used one. Should I just buy a old one and not rebuild? Regardless of how strong the gears are, bearings do go bad....

This doesn't mean much, but my 205 looked like it had never been rebuiltbut maybe it could have been. If you find one, and nothings obviously wrong with it, i'd leave it alone except for cleaning it up and maybe replacing some seals.

I've heard people say the 241 isn't too bad, but if you've already gone through 3 of them, maybe it's time for something stronger?

3 of them? Have yet to go through 1?

Judging from your post I'm leaning toward the 205. Just makes more sense. I plan on 1 ton drivetrain eventually so why wait? What should I look for that will fit a 88 k5? From what I've read the older ford 205's with the 32 spline shafts are the beef, but will it work in my k5 and will it fit the 4l80e?

I may have to get a different input shaft for the d shaft but it shouldn't be much.

Fock.... it's 1 o clock. I need to go to bed.

I'm not sure where I got "3" but it's late and I just interpreted you saying you've had it apart several times as meaning it broke that many times. Sorry.

I'm not an expert but the fords are drivers side drop (I think) but you can get gm version 32 spline input from something with a th400 in front of it.

I think they go for about 100 from a wrecking yard around here.

Ok... so what year should I be looking for?

I had the 241 apart mostly because of curiousity and leaky seals. No problems yet.

I'm not good enough to know what years to search for but I know the later years used the round bolt pattern instead of the earlier figure-8 style. If you find the later style it may bolt up to your existing 241 adaptor. Someone else will have to confirm that though.

I gotta get some sleep.

If your going to run a 4l80e I'd just snag the t-case that came with the trans and run it. They put these cases behind big blocks and turbo diesels(Behind the Cummins in '94 and up), and they hold up fine.

I think the big advantage of the 205 is that if you smack it on something your less likely the break it... you get lower gears with the 241 and a lighter case. SYE it and it's and pretty short too.

I'd agree. SYE is about the only thing the 241 "needs". It's not as strong as the 205, but it seems to hold up quite well. I don't think I'd worry about getting rid of it until it was starting to fail you. Better low range is a good thing.

I like the idea of a SYE, even though I've got a fixed yoke 205.

Example: Blew the gov-lock up in my truck and twisted the rear driveshaft in half. Luckily a few hundred yards from my house. Put it in 4WD, and drove (slowly!) back to the house, with the half driveshaft flailing around under the truck. Had that happened offroad, at worst I would have had to pull the leftover pieces of the driveshaft out to drive out. With a slip yoke, you'd likely lose all your transfercase fluid.

Besides, it seems like the slip yoke setups do seem to leak fluid more commonly than fixed yoke, but that's a minor problem at best.

I don't think we've got anyone here that is blowing up 241's from input power are we? (open question)

If you need a NP205 I have a rebuilt one sitting in my garage that I'm going to get rid of. Its the 27 spline male from a SM465.....has a 6" front driveshaft with it. I can bring it back to Colorado Springs from Texas if interested or ship from Texas. Not in a hurry to get rid of it though as its heavy as hell! PM if interested.

pm sent...

need a 241?:D

I'm not sure on what I want yet. I have a 700r4 with a corvette shift kit and am still not sure if I want to swap it for a 4l80e. I like having the low first gear and with the shift kit it should be stronger then the stock 700r4. Don't know though. Does a shift kit help with strength?

If I can get a good deal on a 205 I'll snap it up... if not the 241 sounds like it's plenty strong. I like the low gears also.

I'm not a fan of the slip yoke though... leaks fluid like a siv and like dyeager said, if you pull your d shaft you end up losing fluid.

I don't know if a shift kit makes a trans stronger, but the shorter shifts and higher pressures should improve clutch life.

A friend of mine ran a 241 behind a 502 with 44 boggers and had no problems and again as everybody said the lower gears are nice.
