i just put a 205tc in my 84 k5 with a slip yoke. as i am changing out the fliud i noticed it was tranny fluid and i always thought that the 205 took gear oil is this true or did some take tranny fliud /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

205's that are connected to manual transmissions use gear oil. 205's that are connected to autos use ATF.
Why? Because if the seal between those two leaks (and they commonly do) then you are not mixing two dissimilar fluids.

When I changed the tranny/t-case oil in my crewcab (SM465/NP205) the first time, ATF came out - I nearly had a heart attack! /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif
The shop I worked at had AllData, and ATF IS the correct fluid for the 465 and 205. Called GM to verify - same thing - ATF. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Since I know better (/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) 80W-90 went in instead. Its quieter, and nicer to shift now. Go figure. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

According to Chilton section 1-28...
A 205 TC would require SAE 80W or SAW 80W-90 GL-5 Lubricant
A 203 TC would require SAE 10W-30 or SAE 10W40 engine oil
A 208 TC would require Dextron II

I have always put 80W-90 in my 205's since it is gear driven just as a SM465. The 203 and 208 TC both are chain driven, so the requirements are different.

in 80's the 205 TC didnt exsist. with the exception of the K30's
Incorrect at least for 1980 (imfamous year of slip yoked 205's on everything...K5, K10, K20, and K30). Years after it was mostly K30's that had them, but some K20's as well.
