I have an NP208... the output shaft seal was leaking so, I pulled it out and replaced is with a new one... and it still leaks? Anyone ever had this problem and know how to resolve it?

What kind of condition is the slip yoke itself in? If it has a grove worn into it from where the seal rides it will not seal properly and will still leak.

the slip yoke is fine... super smooth... its almost like the seal isnt tight enough. That came out wrong

sure it is the right seal? did you gouge the case seat around the seal? I just did my front output shaft, and 20 year stuck bolts aside and getting the seal out it was a faily easy job, and no leaks

Yeah and also 208 is notorious for leaking consider yourself lucky to have one that does not or did not leak. Mine was nice until I had to replace it now leaks like crazy.

There is a steel plug in the output yoke. Often times they leak, requiring brazing or welding in order to seal. In a 208, the fill level is above the yoke so there is hydraulic pressure every time the drive line compresses into the case. There are a lot of threads on this board about this type of leak.

To check, clean the yoke fill it with ATF and apply some moderate air pressure. If it leaks, clean it up and weld it.

the new seal wnt in tight, its the rubber seal around the shaft. I can see where it is coming from... Its not super bad but, it is leaking and makes an oil spot where ever I park, not to mention in my driveway.

I just magically resolved my own issue. 208 rear output. It leaves a drop at the base of the seal, as if it seaps, not leaks, then eventually drips.

In all honesty, I have no idea what the differences in seal brands are - But, I do know my own no longer leaks after switching brands on the fifth replacement.

I had suggestions of checking the shaft bearing for play - Which would give the shaft minimal slop and therefore seap on the seal's edge, checking for grooves, balancing the shaft and such. Nothing fit the bill.

I previously took my seals from Advance Auto and O'Reilly's. This last one, which I replaced for GP when I had the transmis/fer pack down for a rear main leak - hasnt leaked yet. I was past trying to seal it up actually, until I had everything else dried up.

Now, my drive is spotless. The seal is a Timken brand, found at Autozone. Hopefully, you havent been there yet.

Hope this helps

I am on my second seal. It had a 6" lift put on it and they didnt extend the drive shaft. My original concern that the shaft was wobbling a little since it only sat on the output shaft 2". So, I had the drive shaft extended and replaced the seal.. not sure of the brand but it wasnt a TIMKEN. ...and low and behold it still leaks. I know a leaking Chevy is a happy Chevy but... I want to fix it. I will give the TIMKEN a try, thanks.

If the yoke has excessive play than it may be worn or the output bushing in the tail cone may need replacement as well.

i had the same issue with my np208 so i thought after changing out the out put driveshaft seal and bushing. it turned out to be the plug on the slip yoke its self that was leaking. so what i did i had the local drive shaft shop weld in a new plug. but it still leaked a little bit. so what i had to do was i cleaned out the inside of the yoke with some brake cleaner let it dry. then i put some rtv hi temp down inside the yoke pressed it in all the corners about 1/4 in all around to make a good seal and presto no more leaks.... hope this helps. oh yeah its much cheaper then buying a whole new slip yoke.

There is a sleeve you can install on you slip yoke. it will add about a 16th" to the diameter of the slip yoke. im looking for the part number. it was called a speedy sleeve.
