Put the tcase into 4hi the other day and when going through the field it would drop back into 2hi. Did that a couple of times.

Looked at the linkage it all seems fine

this is the first time I have really done any rough terrian since I put the motor tranny and tcase back.

It's almost like it's to easy to move the lever. If in 4hi you barely have to push on the lever and it falls into 2hi, no resistance in it at all.

4x4 does work by the way.

What y'all think?

Do you have a body lift? That could ba part of the problem. Might have to adjust the linkage.

It is common for the shift fork pads to break and fall apart then this will happen.

The forks are common to breaking or wearing out, mine did, a little time with a welder and grinder re-shaping them and all is well, but. You stated how easy it is to move it between ranges, but yet 4hi still works and that sounds like a possible broken detent spring, they rarely break but just my .02

I was just doing some research on the matter,
and I found a guy who was suggesting replacing the np208 chain,
w/ a np241 chain...

He said they're reffered to as "HD 208" chains....

Can anyone corroburate?

I saw something about that and was thinking about it because was rebuilding mine at the time.My chain and gears and the donner parts tcase I had were in mint condition with no signs of wear. Then I thought to myself why is that and it came to me.How many times a year does the average person use the 4wd?I couldn't see spending $70 on a chain when it really isn't needed because I rarely need 4wd myself.

it works just fine, into 4hi neutral and 4lo, never binds up just shifts smooth as butter.

4X4HIGH you said they break and fall apart but will it still shift? and is it like a night and day kinda thing, where is works fine one day then breaks and no good or does it slowly wear out?

It will still shift but will pop out of gear. Yes it will happen over night when the pad finally breaks enough to fall off.

This is true....

Mine worked tuesday, and wouldn't work the following friday.
The plastic peice just falls off.

Mine did EXACTLY what you're describing.
Would go into 4N and 4LO, but pop in and out of 4hi.

Sounds like the shift fork pad.

This site sells a COMPLETE bearing/gasket rebuild kit.
(incl. the hard-to-find needle bearings, for the main gear!)

This site has every OTHER part (I believe) for the NP208TC.

Hope that helps in the long run... :D
