np208 or np241?

241, very similar design but basically they fixed many of the weak points in the 208 when the OEM's switched to 241's.

It's still an aluminum, chain drive case but you don't hear about too many broken ones (though they are probably less common than 208's).

Both cases are weak physically, but internally impressively strong. The NP241 is rated for more torque than an NP205 is. The NP241 has a slightly lower low range as compared to an NP208, has a larger chain, and bigger bearings. Otherwise it is dimensionally and visually identical to the NP208.

Yup the 241 is a better case than the 208. Besides everything Russel said They have an internal lube pump to keep everything oiled and a slightly thicker case. Yes. They are weaker than cast iron cases. But as long as you use the stock braces they hold up just fine.
Many people when building an offroad truck or rig, choose the 241 over the 205 when weight saving is an issue.
The 241 HD xfer cases are pretty stout units.
