Not sure if I've ever had a 208 before, but I just wondered if its possible to shift from H to L range while rolling down the road, or from L to H range with the power supply in a neutral position.

No. You need to stop and put the tranny in N. Then stwitch fron low to high or viseversa. You can only go into 4HI while going slow, under 15mph not 4LOW. You have to stop.

2wd is only available in High range right?
If you want low range it would have to be in 4WD?
e.g.- start out in 4LO, then shift on the fly to 4HI.
If shifting back to 4LO, it would require a complete stop?

You cannot change ranges without stopping completely.

If you want 2WD low range, don't lock your hubs...I used to do this whenever backing up the trailer. Made it a lot easier as I had the 4 speed.

Shifting from 2HI to 4HI and back I've always managed to do at pretty much any speed. As long as the front hubs were locked anyways. Did the same with my 205 up to about 40 mph without trouble. Shifting on the fly refers to shifting within the same range, between 2HI and 4HI.

Alright, sounds reasonable Rene, BUT
say I want to forget about 4WD....I just want a range box to go from LO to HI and from HI to LO. Can this 208 be made into just a rangebox, with out without the whole case?
I'm not sure looking at diagrams of it.

If it could, would it be possible to go from LO to HI without stopping?

I had to start in low range and shift the t case to high range, was with a 203 though. tired 350's dont like pulling heavy trailers with 308's

I wouldnt ever try to go from high range to low while moving though. its hard enough the way it is while in neutral stopped.

You can probably shift from hi to low at speed.

ONE TIME ONLY:waytogo:

After that, you are going to have to replace it because most of the gears will be gone........

If you learn to double clutch it (assuming you have a manual trans) you could conceivably do it. I have a friend who has a F250 with a 460/5 speed/ and 3.55's on ~34" tires. When pulling their 70hp tractor he has to double clutch the transfercase, effectively netting him 8 forward gears. I wouldn't believe it either unless I was riding with him when he was doing it. Had to in town to get pulled off going up hill.

You CANNOT go from Hi to Low or vice versa without coming to a complete stop and then having trans in park or neutral before shifting. You can however change from 2HI to 4HI at any speed (shift on the fly).

Thanks to all, that pretty much sums up the shifting from low to high range and back, on the fly.
