Just wondering how well an NP208 will survive behind a 454/TH400 setup in a Burb weight vehicle? Might be running it with 35"-40" TSL's. Mud/snow, forest trails. No hardcore rock climbing.

I'd stick with the 205 if crawling isn't your thing. The only thing good about the 208 is L4, and cheap replacement everywhere.

Never had a problem with my 208 in my old burb...454, th400, then went 465/208

And in all the military trucks. they put together what gm considered the best of all parts available to build them. then the 241 made it even better

Well I would say thats a little of a stretch. They used the 208 because it had the lowest stock low range.

just reading from wiki. I know that its not the most reliable source. but it made a little sense:dunno::D

Yup...its still going stong too. Its been in 4h or 4l pretty much all the time in the last year and a half. With 39s too

If its in good shape. They are pretty strong. But when they have alot of miles on them, they tend to have problems like jumping out of gear, and worn chains. I think that's why people think they are junk. They have problems with them because they are trying to beat on a t-case with 200k miles on it.
Now a 205 on the other hand, you can beat on pretty much regardless of mileage. I had 1 with 300k on it behind 500lb-ft of torque. It never missed a beat.

Get what I'm saying?

I flog one behind a turbo diesel regularly. It'll hold up just fine to your 454! IIRC, the NP241 is rated for more input torque than a 205 is. The only weakness in those transfer cases is the aluminum housing. Proper skid plates will prevent any possibility of damage there though.

I think the bad rap on 208s and 241s comes from a misunderstanding of the chain driven tcase. People seem to have it stuck in their heads that gear on gear tcases are so much better. But as said just because the chain is a wear item and yo cant beat on a 150k 208 or 241 doesnt make it a bad case.

That's what I'm saying. You can't get a worn out part, throw it under your truck, then get mad and call it junk because it broke after you beat on it.

A friend of a friend (idiot) was talking about what junk th350s are and how he has broke 4 of them. I asked him who was building them. He said he was getting used ones off Craigslist. WTF? No s--t!

My BB sub has a 208.

Although I haven't wheeled with it hard it worked good when I got it.

Only complaint with 241 or 208 is aluminum cases. I broke 2 of them, but both were my fault.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like the 208 should be ok then. Maybe I'll do a proper rebuild (with a US made or equivalent chain) before putting it to hard use. I'll keep an eye out for an NP241 as well.

I was considering taking the 208 out of the Jimmy and swap in the 205 I have but then I would have to convert the SM465 to 32 spline, get an adapter for the 205 and then I would want to do a Northwest fab SYE conversion on the 205. That would be about $750 plus shipping. I'll destroy the 208 first

I've been running a a 700R4/208 behind a 454 on 40' tires and 5:13 gears for 4 years and absolutely love it!

Wow. I was actually considering this since I do have a 700r4/Np241 lying around. I didn't think it would be up to the task with 40"s with 1 tons. Any work done to you 700r4? How many miles have you clocked on this setup? What terrain do you do?
