I was at my local junkyard today looking for a new 208 (nothing broken, mine just leaks from every seam, so I figured I replace it, rebuild it, sell it). I couldn't find one, but they had literally about 15 203's, so I may get one of them instead. Actually, now I can't remember if it was a 203 or 205. Definately the geared one in the cast iron housing, whichever that is.
So here's my question:
Aside from both driveshafts, what else needs to change on my truck to use a 203? Can I actually reuse the front shaft since I have the 4 inch lift, just modify the CV?
I'm running an '88, 700R4, 10-bolt front/rear, 4 inch lift.

if its the geared one its a 205 if its a chain driven one its a 203 which is also full time fourwheel drive unless someone converted it a 205 has 4 positions 4 lo N 2wd 4hi and a 203 has 4lo loc N 4hi 4hi loc but anyways to your ? i think youll be fine. Cuz of your 4 inch lift you have enough drive shaft to pull in or out
hope i helped

BEER-- one is none, two is half, and three is one.

What about tranny bolt-up? Will the 205 (thank you) bolt right up the same adapter, and will the tranny output shaft fit?

Nope, requires a tailshaft change.

Thanks, that's what I was really hoping against...

You'll also need to double check to make sure it's really a 205 anyway. Both the 203 and 205 have cast iron cases and look similar. It seems more likely that they have an abundance of 203's. If they are 205's, you might want to pick up a couple of them, they're getting more valuable all the time.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking that. I figure I'd try to pick up a spare for myself (not that I'll need one from what I've heard about these cases), and a couple to put up on ebay.

How can I distinguish a 205 from a 203 by casing? I didn't look at the badges, but I think a few of them were missing anyway.
What's a junkyard 205 worth? How much should I expect to be paying for these things?

Also, would it bolt right up to a 4x4 TH400?

thanks for the info!

The NP 205 has speedo output on the right side, I think. The NP 203 is the opposite.

Yes, it would bolt to the junkyard TH 400 granted that it was of the design that fits the TH 400 application. Not all 'cases are the same, even if they are all NP 205s.
