So here a situation.. I'm out on my favorite rutty fiery road pouring rain and decide to smash some mud pits.. get into some 2 foot pocket and lock it in. Mud slinging way up I'm getting kinda hot and heavy in the driver seat when I hear some clunking.. thought it was the bearing so took the tire off and they're good. I was backing down the hill for n neutral and something LOCKED up and had to go forward to move again. I jacked it up all fours and locked it in and it sounds like the transfer case is the clinker.. especially at tight turns. Would a 241c nicely replace an np208? I love the low gear the 208 has but how do they stack up against each other

I would bet you it's the front end not the 208. Take the front drive shaft out and see what it does. You will need to take it out anyways so you might as well. I have only seen one busted 208 and it got smashed on a rock and broke the case. I can't even count how many busted D44/10 bolts I've seen. Broke many myself and still have the stock 208 in my 84. Pop out the d-shaft, leave the hubs unlocked, put it in 4-high and drive. If it clangs and bangs it's the t-case. Hate to see you go to all the work of pulling the case just to find out it's OK.

And yes on a 241. Better case, lower low range too!

NP208 is 2.69:1
NP241 is 2.72:1

Not worth swapping for 1.1% better gearing (like changing the axles from 3.73 to 3.77). The 241 does have better lubrication, but you don't usually see cases fail for that. Biggest reasons to swap would be availability of SYE kits and electronic speedo drives. Otherwise run whichever you have.
