i have a th400 with a np208. can i swap it for a 205 without any problems? also what is the diffrences? advantages?

The output shaft and adapter on your TH400 wont work with a NP205.
205 is much stronger than the 208 a worthy upgrade IMO.

yep. i found that out when i rebuilt the 400 for the np208 instead of the one for the 205 :( ive had great luck with the 208, never broke one yet. i did explode a 203 though

If you have the correct adapter and the correct input gear on the 205 then no problems bolting them together.

The 205 is an all gear, cast iron t-case with a low range of 1.96:1, the 208 is a chain driven, aluminum t-case with a low range of 2.62:1.

Advantages of the 205 are bullet proof case, all gear, fixed yoke rear output (not all 205's, after 1980 they were slip yoke rear).
Disadvantage is heavy case and not as low of gearing.

Advantages of the 208 are light weight and low gearing.
Disadvantges are aluminum case, slip yoke rear output and chain driven.

I know this wasn't part of your question, but a NP 241 was the follow-on to the 208. It's supposedly a fair bit stronger than a 208 and has slightly lower gearing. It's still an aluminum case and chain drive, though.

I'm bias.
My 73 Jimmy had a 465 mated to a 205. I swapped to a th350/NP205 combo.
My 74 blazer had a TH350/NP203. I swapped in an NP205 because I was having trouble with the NP203 shifter and I had the transfer-case from my 73. After I blew up my TH350, I put a TH400/NP205 combo.
If I remember right, when I inquire about the price of a used NP208 locally, people would want the same price as an NP205. I would take the NP205 any day. I would only run the NP208 if it came with a vehicle.

i got a really nice 205 for far less than it cost to rebuild my tired 208. its sort of preventative in my mind.

I got a 1987 k30 6.2 diesel turbo 400.What case do I likely have the 208 or 205 Is it stamped anywhere ?? Thanks
