Went to replace the front seal on my 91 K5 as it was transferring fluid as fast as I could put it in transmission.
Example: Put fresh fluid in both to proper levels and went 5 miles on interstate and it was blowing out the tcase vent. Checked trans and no fluid on stick...
Anyhow, Bloody knuckles and grease up to my shoulders later I have it out and there was no input seal
WTF. Looked on the trans shaft and there it was
Something was obviously not right. I removed the front bearing cover and there was the remnants of the old seal still pressed in it.
The red seal was on the trans and is a National #3173 which is the correct (albeit less desirable) seal.
Pressed it out and began inspecting the situation.. From what I could figure, someone was
some serious stuff when they did this. The seal that was on the trans output shaft looked like the edge was crushed so it would fit into the leftover part of the original seal that was still in the tcase. See Pics.
Now I'm scared what else the might have hacked in there.
I put a new double lip seal in there and all looks fine in that respect.
Question... Did the factory use gray silicone when assembling the case halves and also the rear output snorkel? or were there gaskets?
I haven’t had any other problems with the tcase so I don't want to do a rebuild if I don't have to, and really cannot afford to at this time.
