Okay here's my question. Np231 an 241 are basicly the same. 231 use's gear oil 241 use's trans. Why? Could you use gear oil instead?

NP241 should use ATF.

The NP231 I had in my S10 used ATF also.

Not sure where it says to use gear oil in a 231? Although I have heard of people using gear oil in 208/241s without issues. My thought is that if your trans uses ATF then use ATF in the t-case. Just in case a seal leaks there is no fluid cross contamination.

Just to make things more confusing, the 205 t-cases mostly use gear oil. But I have heard of applications that say to use ATF.

So, all in all, just pee in the t-case. I bet it'll be just fine.

Lol. I thought you were supose to do that in the heater vent?
See I find that interesting cause my s-10 has gear oil (np231)
So any one got any info on wat t-case use's what?

My thought is that if your trans uses ATF then use ATF in the t-case. Just in case a seal leaks there is no fluid cross contamination.

Then I would go with this logic.

At the same time if a seal blows fluid would just run out mating surface there is no seal to keep it the adapter plate.

The point was that if the input shaft seal on the t-case fails, you wont have gear oil from the t-case leaking into the auto trans fluid. Automatic transmissions don't like gear oil. So, if you have an auto trans, use the matching ATF in the t-case.

And inside the t-case adapter area is a "wet" space. It's open to the back of the trans. The only thing stopping gear oil in a t-case from entering an auto trans is the t-case input shaft seal. On that same note, if you have a leak between the adapter and t-case or adapter and trans, you need to remove and reseal those areas or you are just losing trans fluid.

Also, if you want to discuss "correct" t-case fluids, the general rule of thumb is...
for chain driven t-cases (231/208/241) you use ATF
for gear driven t-cases (205) you would use gear oil
But, as I stated before, that is not always what is required. Read the owners manual for best results.

I've never seen a 231 or 241 that was specified to use gear oil, and don't see how the oil pump in these could even handle gear lube.

Does your S-10 just happen to have gear lube in the t-case, or is that what the owner's manual calls for?
