This is for the '89-91 drivers side drop cases. If there is any difference.

Looking at Rockauto, the input seal applications seem...optimistic.

Just narrowing it down, for a 1990 K5, I see two Timken part numbers for the seal: 710928 and 3173

Between those two part numbers, the only information given that is different is the specs on one, and cross reference part numbers. Warranty is the same, general description is identical. Here is the link to the 710928 number if it matters: Rockauto 710928

But if I click application, one says K5 '73-04, the other says K5 '87-94. Obviously those are some weird year splits, one would supposedly fit four different t-cases but the other three?

Anyway, having dealt with this for an axle seal before (same supposed application, one manufacturers part fit, the other did not), and since I'll be on a tight timeline, is there any general advice as to what seal is known to work? I'm ok without Timken, National and USA Standard Gear are listed (Although USA being about 1/4 the cost of the others causes concern) but if anyone knows for sure a part number that works, I'll go that route. Doesn't have to be Rockauto, I just use them to check things because they have pretty extensive listings.

This site is my go to on stuff like this:

Its basically a Federal Mogul parts lookup.

Looks like the 710928 is wider.

Pretty significant difference in width, but I notice the rest are different as well. Why the differences for supposedly the same application?

I can't imagine width has too much of an impact in this location, no positive or negative to either.

Agreed- and I'm guessing that the couple thousandths off they are isn't enough to make a difference in the fitment of it.

At $6 I would normally say buy both and return one later. But returns on Rockauto suck. Better to buy local At NAPA or a good mom and pop store if they have something in stock.

Yep, for something that price local is typically better IMO. As long as they have it. Napa's about the closest thing to a mom and pop near me.

From what I see, the one that @frankin5 posted is correct, from what I remember. I do remember having a local counter person look one up and the listing showed 2 options. They listed one version which required two of the seals, installed facing each other, where the other one had both opposing lips in one part.

Just FYI, I didn't look up any of the part numbers listed originally, just looked at the link in Frankin's post.

Early np241 had a different aluminum cone thing/seal retainer on the front. Double row ball bearing input... I’m running one of these and have another as a spare...

Ive been told that later cases only have a single row input bearing, with a different bearing/seal retainer, and that they can be swapped. Not sure if that also means a different seal between them?
