I just finished up installing the new shaft into my 241. I took my time and everything was pretty straight forward and easy. Of course, I always doubt myself and want to double check.

When I have the case standing up and turn the flange back and forth I hear some noise. If I lay it down in it's normal operating angle and do the same thing, I don't hear it. Is this OK or did I do something wrong with the fork and fork housing?

I left the fork and everything in the case and only removed the shaft.

Am I good?

No noise laying flat

Noise upright

Installing it and trying it maybe the only way to know. I wonder if the weight of the gears standing on the back loads the drive chain on the side of the gears

I can't watch the video, do you have both yokes in place?

I noticed a fair bit of play in the front and rear outputs after I (just) did the conversion but realized that is because the yokes when tightened pull the shafts up against their respective bearings. Seems a bit odd because both yokes pull in opposite directions, but whatever.

I just went and tested mine laying "as installed" and "on end", no difference in noise I could discern. Plenty of slop in 4WD between front and rear outputs though. I tried in every gear to see if it would make noise. Sorry, not sure if that is much help, since I can't see/hear your videos to see what I should be listening for with mine. But since there wasn't anything I didn't expect noise-wise, I'm guessing we have different issues.

When I had the case still open, I could spin it in the vertical position and it appeared the sounds were coming from the secondary, planetary gears???!? Not sure on what they are called. It's the spinning gears inside the hub assembly.

Only "trouble" I had in assembly was getting the planetary gears to line up so the assembly would slip together, but that was minimal.

I don't recall any noises while I was assembling, everything turned quiet and nice and smooth.

I did have it slip in pretty easily and the chain looks parallel to the other sprocket. I even marked the sprocket and planetary gear so they went back in "roughly" in the same location. I was careful and didn't force anything. It all just fit together nicely and straight forward. So, don't know.....:dunno:

Side note, sorry about the fires up there. I'll be coming up next week for the holiday to try and relax. My friend is fighting fires up there too.

I guess I'll head to the junkyard tomorrow and try a few out before I open the thing back up again. Thanks Dorian.

Hit the junkyard and found a few 241's. Spun them standing up and laying down....no extra noise. So I guess I need to take the thing apart and see if I can figure it out. Bummer. :frown1:

It is perfectly normal for a t-case to make noise when it is standing on the input shaft, the chain sprocket falls down into the shift collar and makes a clicking noise. If it is quiet and shifts ok when resting in its normal position then it's fine. Seems like the ones with the SYE are worse, probably because a slightly different snap ring groove.

Bottom line is there isn't any need to take it back apart.:woot:
