I'm trying to track down a problem in my drivetrain. Driving down a hard surface road, something briefly bound up and then released with a small bang. Front hubs were locked but I was in 2 wheel drive. I assumed I had a problem with the govlock and raised the rear wheels to check it out. With the transfer case in neutral I could not rotate the drive train. I had to unlock the front hubs. Is this normal? I assumed the front and rear shafts were not coupled in neutral. In 2 wheel drive with the transmission in neutral, everything rotates just fine.

Maybe a little more info would help

When you say "something briefly bound up", did you feel something bind up?

If so, did you feel it in the steering?

Were you driving straight or were you turning when it happened?

At this point, I can only think to start pulling the hubs and diff covers and draining the t-case to look for broken parts. I know that's not a good answer though.

Sorry I'm not more help. I bumped it TTT for ya though. :D

If the transfer case is actually in neutral, then the rear wheels should be able to rotate no matter what the front end or transmission is.

Sounds to me like it might be a linkage problem and you were actually in 4wd when you thought you were in 2wd and maybe even when you thought you were in neutral.

I was driving straight down a paved road, up a small grade. If it had not been for the noise, I might have passed it off as the motor stumbling, but I know it wasn't that. It was about that quick though.

Have not checked the linkage for adjustment yet. I may have a problem in the transfer case as the yoke wiggles on the rear shaft. I'm sure it was tight when I installed the SYE.

I did find one problem when I pulled the front diff cover off. My E Locker has spun inside the housing and pulled the wires out. I don't know if that is the noise I heard. I got stuck a while back when I was by myself and got pretty rough on it rocking it out.:doah: I know better, but get impatient. If I understand how the E Locker works, it will briefly unlock then relock when changing directions. When I get too heavy on the gas, that has to be hard on things.

Are you aware of the NP241's problem with "snapring failure"? If not, Google it. I found one forum that briefly describes it: http://www.pavementsucks.com/board/thread-transfer-case-saver

I got one of these for when I rebuild/SYE/install my 241: http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cat...placements_and_parts/transfer_case_saver.html

Perhaps, did you leave the E-locker engaged when you got back on the pavement?

When the transfer case is in neutral, all it does is uncouple the outputs, and the input. The outputs are locked together, as if in 4wd. Do it again, but unlock your hubs. The front shaft will turn, and that's normal.

I wasn't aware of the snap ring problem. Thanks for the links.
I'm positive I didn't have the E Locker engaged. I tend to only turn it on when necessary and the lighted switch is where I can easily see it.

That's good to know. I wasn't looking forward to pulling the transfer case just for diagnostic purposes. Hopefully the loose yoke problem can be rectified with the TC still in the truck.

I'm thinking my noise must have been in the front axle. I'll pull the locker out when it's not so crazy around here. I volunteered to help my son-in-law with a mountain bike race this weekend and just found out starting next week I'm working 6 10hr days/week until further notice. With other family obligations I think my projects just dropped to the bottom of the list.
