My NP241 is leaking pretty from the case-half seal. Is it as simple as pulling the driveshaft, draining the oil, and removing a few bolts for the case to come apart? Or is it more complicated than that? The shop says they want $500 to do the job, so trying to decide if it's worth it for me to screw around with the task.

Its a pretty easy deal to split the case and rtv back together. I just used rightstuff a couple years ago and it's still leak free.

A couple of caveats...

First of all, you have to get it really clean inside. Any oil dripping down can ruin the new gasket you're trying to form and you get to do the whole thing over again. RightStuff is more forgiving than silicone, as it's so sticky and sets up so fast.

You have to remove the yoke to get the back of the case off, so be prepared to reseal the yoke splines as well. I think you have to pull 1 snap-ring.

Be careful with what pulls out with the back of the case or you can have a hard time getting it back together under the truck. It will take a little fiddling to get both shafts and the shift rails all aligned at the same time, so form a plan for that (or even practice) before spreading the sealant (which will potentially be in your tool path).

I resealed mine 3 times to try to fix the continual leak. Finally pressurized the case through the vent. The housing was cracked at the casting seam. Had to pull it out and weld it up.
