If your serious in your doomsday planning you cant beat a mechanical diesel... That being said I think you should set your target on buying something with a decent body and barn doors as noted above. Everything else can be swapped pretty damn easy.
 
Why remove the four speed???? I thought you were going for dependable?

How limited? If it's a hydraulic clutch, it's pretty effortless.

I can't agree with this. Maybe it's just the return spring on the mechanical setup, but it is night and day difference.

I agree with this its a night and day difference in how hard the pedal is to push. I at one time had an 87 with a hydro clutch and a 73 with a mechnical clutch. The hydro clutch was so much easier to push I hardly noticed it. On the other hand my knee would twinge ( old football injury ya know ) everytime I hit the clutch on the 73

A quart of Marvel Mystery Oil added to the fuel tank every so often will help keep the IP lubed properly.....its as good or better than most of the other more expensive additives...I've heard of guys adding ATF to diesel fuel to clean injectors ,but I'm leery of adding any,seeing some types have friction additives in them,and aren't just lubricant,and the high detergent might harm the seals in the IP too possibly...best to stick with additives designed for that purpose ..

I only put a small amount of diesel fuel treatment in my trucks once in a while during winter,and the Marvel oil too,during warmer weather...seems to help it start easier when it is real cold out...I buy whatever brand is on sale like STP,Diesel-Kleen,Howes Lubricator,are a few brands I have used..
 
can also use 2 stroke oil in a pinch.

its crazy that you'll be snagging the 4 speed burb and swapping it out, where most people would be trying to swap it in.
maybe find a good ck5 member near by that wants the 4 speed, and do a trade. that way two people get what they want.
either way, hope everything works out for ya. looks like a pretty solid candidate so far.
 
I think that burb looks sa-weet! I wish I hadn't hacked a hole in my dash for a CD player now that I know cool retrofit ones are available... I tend to agree, seems a bit unfortunate to alter a unique Suburban. Mine came with a gas tank skid plate and a 4 speed too.

The EMP thing I can understand. But, we have the only EMP large enough in the world to pull off such an event. And its not big enough to wipe out anything except maybe a large city at most. Now detonating a nuke in the atmosphere would have the same effect, but, most likely IF the NK's did it, they would use it for its physically destructive capabilites, rather than a high atmosphere detonation. But, people are ingenious and we wont know till it happens. But we also have the worlds most advanced radar and foreign object tracking systems in the world, so hopefully we will see it coming and be able to deal with it, preferably over little kim jung song whatever the hell his name is house. I understand the fear completely, and I pray that it doesnt happen. But, we are due for a World War pretty soon anyways, humans just cant seem to get along.

Yeah, it's too bad you aren't closer. I have a 1989 GMC V1500 with a TH400 someone swapped in. I would gladly trade you for that hydraulic 4 speed set up.

I know you are getting the burb for the longer body and stuff.

Having read other posts of yours here Lawrence I would say that you are going to have a hard time running the clutch,

That said have you looked into the any type of handicap controls? I knew a guy that was born without a leg and all of his trucks were sticks, he had the a lever on the dash he pulled for the brakes.

Danger Will Robinson! Marvel is like atf with valve grind compound added for abrasive cleaning. It will accelerate the wear of your injectors not make them last longer. No offense Diesel4u, just saying so you can check it out and decide if you want to stay with that program. :thumb:

Metro, whatever you use, put it in every tank. Your injectors can't remember that you put lube in the fuel two tanksfulls ago unless you just added a little to top it off and there was some mixed in.:whistle:

I trust Marvel Mystery Oil ,its been around for a long long time,and I doubt they would reccomend using it in diesel fuel if it had any potential for harming the engine or injectors,especially in big rigs,if it did any harm they would have been sued out of bussiness a long time ago--they tout it as a substitute for the sulpher taken out of todays diesel fuel right on the can.........dont know where you heard it has valve grinding compound in it either,though it does have similarities to ATF,its a lubricant as well as a solvent,with a film strength higher than many thick motor oils...

My truck has only had a few quarts of it added over the past 10 years,as I do not drive it much on the street,it would take me a long time to wear out any injectors at that rate using it...I have added a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to the crankcase oil in many of my vehicles over the past 35 years and never had any problems resulting from its use,I liked to change the oil when I bought a new to me vehicle and add the Marvel to it,run it 500 miles or so,and change it again...

Nope!

There was some evidence of a bearing starting to fail in the form of some metal flakes found in the oil filter but it was otherwise sold as a running engine! It had some issues with the turbocharger loosing boost now and then, and it was hard starting due to some bad glow plugs, but was a good engine otherwise. I just wanted MOAR POWAR!
