My tranny started to grind going into third gear today. What would be the cause. My guess is the synchro's or shift fork. Need to fix ASAP as this is my DD.

If its just third, probably the synchronizer for that gear.
If its hard to shift in any gear, your clutch might not be adjusted right, or the pilot bearing/bushing might be binding and only third is worn enough for it to show up.

There is no fix for a worn synchro other than a tear down and replacement. Of course, a complete inspection and replacement of everything worn needs to be done at the same time.

People have masked the problem with thicker oil to slow the gears down faster, but its not a fix.

Double check the clutch setup, since its fast and easy. If it absolutely has to roll, you might shop around for a rebuilt or find one in a junkyard and rebuild it.

A replace can be done in a day.
A removal, tear down and rebuild, and replace can only be done in a day if you have all the parts and there are no surprises.

BTW, I have seen transmissions run with worn synchros for a long time, and I have seen the synchro come apart and trash the transmission soon after starting to grind.

You just never know.

yep, nv4500 3rd gear syncro notorious for the 1st one to go out.

Do you have the correct fluid for the NV4500 in it? if not, probably assisted in taking the syncro out.

this is the 3rd gear syncro out of a buddies nv4500.

Im running the oil from Amsoil. I also have n NV4500 in my Blazer. If the Amsoil is what killed this one I need to change the oil in both.

How hard are they to fix and where to get the parts.

There is only one oil for the NV4500, it's the spendy stuff from either GM or Dodge. It's actually an obsolete lube being as it's GL-4. Pretty sure the Amsoil stuff contributed.

Its possible its the Amsoil, but I kinda doubt it. I have not caught them out yet. They have a rep for doing their homework.

If it was a general gear lube from them, I would be worried, but since it specifically states it not only meets GL4 standards but actually calls out that transmission by name, that tells me that they have some kind of test results to back it up.

I could be wrong, of course. But I did a lot of research before I switched all my stuff to their lubes, and so far, nothing I am running their stuff in has had a lube related failure.

Of course, I am not running that transmission, so that may be the exception.

But, I am running their stuff in every engine, transmission, gearbox and diff I have except for the genset, and have been doing so for over 10 years.

I replaced the engine in my 3/4 ton after well over 200K, and it still had 35# of oil pressure at idle. Water pump grenaded and it either warped the head or put a hairline crack between two cylinders.

Just did not have time to tear it down and try to rebuild it.

BTW, the genset is turbocharged, and just cries out for a synthetic lube, but I'm just too darned cheap to shell out for 8 gallons of Amsoil........

I've heard of failures with guys running the Amsoil in there NV4500
