Can i buy a dodge diesel NV4500 and then swap the mainshaft out to a chevy 32 spline? I am in the process of buying a NV 4500 for my cummins swap but would like to run a 32 spline 205 behind it because they are a lot easier to find but want to run the dodge unit to avoid buying a different bellhousing.

OR can i swap the input in a chevy 32 spline 205 to a dodge 29 spline?

Why would you need a different bell housing? The later model GM 4500's will bolt to the dodge bell just fine :D

might be a whole lot easyer to find/swap the dodge input to the 205 case.

Can it be done ? Cummins trucks only used the 205 in the first gen trucks, 89-93 (5 speed only) and they were a 29 spline 205, the gassers used a 23 spline. They also used a coupler from the trans to the case where as a 205 when put behind a 4500 uses no coupler, if you run a short input 32 spline 205 (round pattern) they will bolt right up to the back of the 4500.

i am not 100% on the dodge stuff. but ya if he has the 32 spline now might just find the 85-91 round 6 205 and get the spacer and bolt it all up that way.

I've just been having a hell of a time finding a NV4500 period! Let alone the one i want. I don't really want to fork out 2K for a re built one either.

I would like to go the GM route but found a lead on a dodge diesel model tonight so i may just get that going that way i can move forward. Although i may be shooting myself in the foot because i'll be limited to the 29 spline 205 which are rare too!

I'd swap 205 inputs before doing a 4500 mainshaft swap. Mainshaft swap is a big job requiring almost 100% disassembly of the NV4500 guts...and a mainshaft isn't cheap.

The one that is in my Dodge, soon to be on its way to my Chevy, is a Chevy NV4500 with a Dodge bell housing, Dodge input and a AA spacer to the Chevy 205.

I was having the same problem awhile back as well, I was finding lots of Dodge 4500's but was having a hell of a time finding the 29spline 205, and when I did, they were asking $650 and up for a 100k+ t case. I ending up dropping the coin on a rebuilt GM 4500 (from a 00 diesel app.) went with a oversized SB Dodge input, Dodge bellhousing and a SB DD clutch set up. I am using a round pattern 205 with the 32spline short input, no adapters needed and almost the same length as a 465/205 set up. If you use a long input you will need a spacer/adapter, like kgblazerfive said, or a figure 8 case can be used but the adapter is around 7 bills.
