looking to service my nv4500 and just checking to see who is running what fluid ? 1.5ton truck and 8.1L in front used for TOWING 10k trailer loaded all the time in town or highway and up and down hills .

i do have a pto unit off the 1 side so if i have to do a full drain and fluid swap this would be more involved .

And YES i know these take special oil . Just looking for favorite brands here .

thanks for the options and input .

I lean on superstick transmissions for tech like this. He's a performance builder. He suggested a particular redline oil for my g56 and I know he would have the right fluid for your nv4500.

In my blazer it's still got the gm fluid from @MuddinManny lol

I used gm fluid that’s recommended for the nv4500. Redline makes a gl4 fluid, I believe amsoil does as well.

Fluid on these are pretty important due to the synchros material. Don’t use any old “gear oil”, these aren’t np205’s.

Here’s the gm part number 12346190 for one of the correct fluids.

The stuff is expensive but necessary.

I use the GM sauce. I know there are other options, but to me, the cost is still cheap insurance as these are not cheap transmissions to rebuild if you screw up the synchros.

I have called royal purple directly and they stated they do not have an nv4500 fluid.

I use the Redline MT85. I overfill the trans by about .5 to 1qt so as to lube the input bearings better. If you install a street el in the fill plug hole pointed up it'll allow you to check the extra fluid level.

I also run a filter. It's a passive filter in place of the PTO cover. Might be a good idea for you to do that given the heavy use. Torque king also has some bolt on oil coolers which also might be a good idea for you.

heads up on the gm stuff . its changed part# again . just got off the phone with my local gm parts counter and found its now 19369226 link here . https://www.gmpartsdirect.com/oem-parts/gm-synthetic-manual-transmission-fluid-gl-4-75w-90-32-oz-19369226?c=bD0xJm49U2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHM=

found a dealer in the vagas area online selling it for $19.08 per qrt and i got 6 shipped for $21.65 .

i got 6 so i could over fill a bit like guys do to help the front bearing . also i have a PTO unit so it holds extra fluid and i wasnt sure just how much .
