NV4500 info request

OK gents I have a question about NV4500's. I've found a 1988 C2500 in the junkyard with a 350cid V8 and a 5spd manual transmission. I'm assuming this is an NV4500 b/c it's a 5spd and not an SM465. Is there anyway to confirm from the VIN?

Also, how much work would it take to use a 2WD version in a 4WD truck? Would it be mroe useful just to grab it as a core and work towards a rebuilt 4WD model?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, I'm going to grab it anyway just for parts or core exchange b/c I can get it for probably $50. Just trying to do as much research ahead of time.

It's not a 4500, just a Getrag 5 speed. You can convert it, but would cheaper and easier just to find a 4wd version.

OK thanks. I wasn't aware of the Getrag, I thought they used SM465's and then NV4500's. Guess it's not even worth my time. I knew they used Getrags behind Cummins in Rams but not chevy's.

What's the breakdown of what years/models I should look for an NV4500 in?

92-up 8 lug 3/4 ton and 1 ton, both 2wd and 4wd...

The deisel Getrag is totally different I believe, never saw one so can't really comment on it. Dont' think they were very good, reason they went to the 4500....
