For those of you who have done this swap on a gen I engine, what is the distance from the front of the bellhousing to the shifter. Or what is the difference in shifter location compared to a SM465? Thanks.

Getting a tape measure up there would be tough, but the sm465 shifter hole is closer to the motor by several inches. Novak.com has some measurements online.

I believe it is approx 5" further back. Enough that you cannot install a shifter boot on the NV4500's stick due to how close it sits to a 208 or 241's shifter. 205 and 203 shouldn't have any trouble though.

I am looking at a swap into my 63 2WD so no transfer case shifter to worry about. Thanks for the measurement that give me something to work with. The closest thing I have been able to come up with is that the distance is 9" from the front of the tranny but I didn't know if the bellhousing was the same depth as a gen I bell. I am also looking at just using one of the space plates that mates the 465 bell to a dodge 4500 so that adds another 1" to the mix.

I can get you a more exact measurement tomorrow afternoon, just so happens that my truck is missing it's cab at the moment, so getting at the transmission is real easy! And BTW, you are correct in assuming that the bellhousings are the same depth as the older SM420s or SM465s

I have one of each on the floor right now.

The NV4500 shifter is 4.5" farther back than the SM465 shifter. The NV4500 shifter is 9.5" behind the back of the bell (Bell is 6" so that'd be 15.5" back from the rear of the engine)
