Nv4500 Rebuild Kit

Hey everyone, I am having my nv4500 rebuilt, I snapped the rear main output. I have a 12v cummins in my crew cab dually and then the nv4500 behind it to a divorced np205.

Its from a 2wd 1996 V10 truck, so gasser truck, 29spline. I would love to upgrade it to a 31spline with the fixed 5th gear nut lock issue. I am bringing it to a shop but I figure they dont have to do the footwork to figure out what I want so here I am looking around the internet. Who has bought a full rebuild kit for an nv4500? I am finding very different prices on some of these rebuild kits but I cannot find the difference in the kits. Who can help me out on what one to order?

Wish I could help, but I cannot. I am very curious to see what comes up here.

I was told my crew cab has a dodge input shaft (the larger Cummins input) and a gm output shaft. Should be the best situation for an nv4500 behind a Cummins.

Those 12 valves are something else on the bottom end torque. I feel like I could break anything in the drivelines without a lot of effort.
 
I would talk that over with the shop first. Many shops do not like customer supplied parts.

I'd put money on them all being identical. Especially allstate and tpw.
 
I’m in the middle of my 4500 tearing itself apart. I looked at rebuild kits but right now I’m not set up to do that job myself. Got an old school trans shop in Denver that will rebuild one for me and I’ll give him back my trans as a core.

Used ones with unknown mileage that came from a tow truck in the mountains probably not quite as bulletproof.

Sadly between Larry and I that makes 3 for 3. He’s put a used 4500 in each of his trucks along with the one of mine and he’s replaced both of his with rebuilt units.

It’s a gamble going used but I got a solid year and a half out of mine. It’s capable of the torque the 8.1 produces but I feel something came apart. Bearing or something and the resulting shrapnel started in on the rest. As it sounds like an alligator gurgling rocks when idling in neutral.

Since Larry replaced his 4500’s they have worked like a top. No noise and zero issues. He probably got 20k miles or more on his K10 since he put that one in. Most of those being on desert trips with 80-90mph sustained blasts on interstate and dirt putting around in 2nd or 3rd all day with the occasional crawl in low.
 
A mild cummins can chew up a 4500 without much fuss. I'm surprised 8.1s still use the small input.

Well, I ain't ever heard of a factory-equipped 8.1/NV4500...so GM clearly wasn't on board with it lol.

In my '93 with a 454 at 175k the rear output and NP241 input had nearly rolled over. The tranny guy was a little shocked it was still holding together. Anyways, I replaced them both and they are back in the truck now waiting for me to finish the engine swap.
 
Are the ZF trans that came behind the 8.1 from the factory unobtainium?
They only used the zf from ‘01-06 on both the 8.1 and LB7 dirtymax. I don’t have production numbers but I can remember they had a really low take rate. So yeah they are hard to find and really expensive if you do find one.

Having driven Larry’s pewterpuff ‘01 8.1/zf 6-speed a couple of times myself I’d stick with the 4500. The 4500 has better shift feel, loaded or empty. For some odd reason the only time the zf shifts nice is with a load behind it. Empty, it’s notchy and clumsy. Plus the zf would not fit in a square without a tall body lift or major surgery to the floor to fit it. That sucker is huge.
 
Thanks for the tips guys. I emailed them to check what they thought. Trying not to waste their time searching for me but also understand the don't want customer bringing shit to them and hope it works. I'll keep ya updated
 
Have you priced a reman unit from a name brand place ?

Might be faster and better all around in the long run . But having a mut and broken parts might kill that deal .
 
Anyone know of a trustworthy nv4500 builder/retailer? I don’t need a trans…yet. It would be nice to know a place where one could order a solidly rebuilt nv4500.

Pro tip here, you want a shop to do the work let them get the parts. Tell them what you want and if they can't find the specific thing you want point them in the direction. Part of the deal is they need to be able to make money on the labor and the parts. Taking part of it away tends to make the incentive to get it done get lost. Or as my old parts manager used to pound into my head "you don't take your own steak to the steakhouse do you?".

This shop is an old-school one-man operation. All he does is manual transmissions, T-cases and differentials. No automatics, no computer-controlled crap. Granted that type of guy is a dying breed, but you need to beach out locally and see what's out there.

I can completely appreciate that idea. I worked in a bike shop for years as a tech and had same issues, online purchase, parts didnt fit etc so thats why I figured id ask here. Ill chat with them more. Thanks
