Looking for info on swapping a NV4500 into my 86 GMC. I'm using the 208 transfer case so thats a direct fit but my concerns are with the shifter location. The SM465 thats in there has the shifter farther forward than the NV4500 so with the shifter moving backwards will it interfear with the 208 shifter? The 208 shifter has that rather large shifter housing not just a boot so I think they will interfear with each other. Anybody done this swap?

I have, and yes, your NV4500's shifter boot will interfere with the NP208's shifter housing. I had to move the 208 shifter back a couple inches and shorten / thread the linkage rod to make it fit. This is easily done in a K5 or truck with bucket seats and a center console, but a bench seat sits too far forwards and covers the shifter.

Thats exactly what I was affraid of! I just measured things at the junkyard and came to just that conclusion. I cant really move my shifter back so I guess the NV4500 is out!

Russel is correct but incorrect. Ditch the plastic housing over the shifter. You don't need it. That will eliminate any interference. You will need to modify the top plate exposed so it covers the entire pan of the shifter housing. You will need to extend your shift linkage rod if you had a SM465. You may need to shorten it if you have an auto tranny. The change is totally doable, as I have done it to my 83 K10 and there is no seal issue around the boot and shifter.
