would like to know what parts are the best to have,to swap a nv4500 instead of a 465. truck is a 1977 3/4 ton 4x4 6.2 with 465, 205.did gm every have these option. or do i have to go for a dodge system. been reading on this a bit.i sure don,t want an internal slave!its got to be exterior or mecanical.i have a hydralic hose press an can miss match fittings or weld different ones before pressing them! would like to know what years is the best and most stock looking fit? i have no lift on truck, and not planning one. thanks on any information!:o

You will not be able to run the factory external slave cylinder on your NV4500, as it will hit your front driveshaft without any lift.

So, you'll need to buy the advance adapters bellhousing that puts the clutch on the driver's side, and also the bracket for the external slave cylinder from the landcruiser.

To mate the NP205 up, you will need to purchase an adapter to go between the 4500 and 205 unless you find a newer 32 spline 6 bolt round NP205. However, the newer t-case would require you to find an aftermarket shifter solution. I'd personally recommend running an NP208 or NP241 (pass side drop) behind the NV4500 however, just for concerns of how much weight the 5th gear housing can handle.

If you do switch over to a chain driven t-case, there is also the problem of the transmission's shifter boot being in the way of the t-case shifter, so you may need to work out a cable shifter that mounts away from the transmission shifter boot.

Of course, you know about the hydraulic clutch stuff that needs to be dealt with as well. The 73-80 trucks add an extra challenge due to the way their firewall is designed. I had to add a bunch of reinforcement to keep the firewall from moving when actuating the clutch.

so theres no direct fit parts that gm ever made. the weight off the 205 could well be a problem? and buying adapters may get pricy!how about a gear vendor over drive, already priced them out quit a few years ago.maybe wouldn,t cost much more and would fit better. every played with one off those?its a retired work truck, myfather bought it new in august 1977,its like the baby of the famely like too keep it as original as possible.

I've never dealt with a gear vendors overdrive unit or anything similar, sorry!

But yeah, there is some custom work to be done to install an NV4500. Especially in the older 73-80 pickups and if you want to avoid an internal slave cylinder. I can't say for sure that the 205 is too heavy for the transmission, but I personally wouldn't trust it. 205 is definitely tough, but I far prefer the low range of the newer chain driven cases, and have never had one fail on me before.
