My friend pulled the top cover of a dodge nv4500 (later version) and when he put it back on 5th and reverse dont work. He can shift into all the gears but 5th. And when he tries reverse it gets stuck. Is there a special way the cover goes back on (like the sm465 having to be half way into reverse)?

No special secret shift position required. Make sure the tranny itself is in nuetral, shifter in nuetral and ensure the shift forks drop into the correct spots. 5th and reverse are related inside the tranny, I'd say that particular shift fork is just not in it's slot properly.

Getting the 5th/reverse fork engaged with the shift fork requires a little attention, but no special tricks. Pull the cover back off and look down the side and you'll see the lever down there that needs to engage with the fork. Once you see what you are aiming for it is not difficult to get engaged. It is kind of easy to miss because it is down the side and is out of sight/out of mind.

Ok so we are getting it lined up for sure, but it still gets stuck in reverse. Everything in the trans shifts fine by hand. I think the 5th gear/reverse fork is the problem, I think its bent. Does this sound like its a possibility?

Man, I doubt it. The shifter arm is made of steel. The shift fork down on 5th/rev collar is aluminum, but if it worked before, I doubt it is screwed up now. You are for sure getting the steel shift lug on the inside of the driver's side of the case lined up with the corresponding component on the cover?? If you are having issues with it, it may not be in neutral. IIRC, the 5th/rev can be "over-shifted" to actually go past where is should be limited to so it feels like there is an extra detent beyond the normal range of operation. I'm not sure if this can happen with the rear housing on, but I think I experienced it when it was off. That is all I can figure it can be. It is a bit tricky, but with all shift collars in neutral and a little screwing around with that 5th/rev steel arm the cover should drop on with no force required to seat it.

Hope it helps.
