Wasilla AK,
So I picked up a 91 K1500 shortbed , good runner but the T-case chain is jumping. I can either rebuild the tcase ( not really wanting to spend the money) or I can swap in a NV4500/241 that I have in the shop .

What I am wondering is overall lengths, I'd really like to avoid spending the extra money on shortening the rear shaft ( I have the proper front shaft of needed) .

My other concern is input shaft , is the spline and pilot diameter the same between the two? Or am I gonna need a clutch disc as well .

I'm trying to go ultra low buck , using just what I have from my junk pile.

Why not just put the 241 onto the existing NV3500 or whatever the early ones are called?

Pretty sure it's 27-spline , and I don't have any of those cases in my inventory.

And I would hate to do go through the hassle of tearing two cases apart just to swap inputs and end up with a crappy 5-speed .

The truck is not super nice , it's a beater with a heater . As such I don't want to spend a lot of money or effort on it .

When it's done I will be using it for my winter commuter to keep the wear and tear of my 98.5 Cummins

I am pretty sure the NV3500 is 32 spline output just like the NV4500.

All the manual trans outputs were 32 spline. Getrash 5 speed, NV3500, NV4500, SM465 (81-up)

Technically, 81-84 are split for the SM465.

If you had a 1/2 or 3/4 ton 81-84 SM465, it was 32 spline. If you got an SM465 in an '81-84 K30, it was still 10 spline.

The 4 speed overdrive from the 80's used a 32 spline output too.

Thanks for the added detail Chris, and I forgot about the A-833 OD 4 speed.

See I thought all the manuals were 32 spline as well , but the S10 also used this trans and I'm pretty sure it's a 27 spline ........but I think those use a different length tail housings .

Anyways I guess I should not be lazy and pull the Tcase and count splines .

Bash that 208 off a rock a few times and get back to me.

I have broken a few 10-spline collars but never the shafts .

I have broke the planetary basket in 2 different 208's and broke multiple cases .

Not sure if you're still needing info, but this is correct. S-10 5-speeds have 27-spline outputs and use a 5-bolt T-case flange (instead of 6). Full size transmissions should be pretty much interchangeable once GM standardized the lengths, as long as the output shaft is correct.
