I have a 400sb i am preparing to put in my 87 1/2 ton. It has an Edelbrock ProFlo MPFI 1000cfm vortec intake setup w/ E-Tec 170 heads, forged rods and pistons, Edelbrock "400 Cam" (cant remember specs) and some other goodies. Thats all isnt the important part, i am realy wondering what i can get away with in NY State as far as exhaust goes. What i realy want to run is dual 3" collectors w/ hi flo "Off Road" style Cats (one on each collector), and then y-pipe it into a single 3.5" exhaust. Can i get away with the "off road" only Catalytic Converters or will i have problems getting it inspected in NYS? I have heard both stories, and also the "depends on who you take it to" line more than a few times, but i realy want to know if the hi'flo non OE style Cats will be legal, or if no Cats will be. I dont want to run the truck w/o Cats, but i also dont really want the restrictive OE style Cats on it. If i have to i will, but hopefully i can get away with the hi'flo ones. I have big plans for my truck, it realy doesnt need any of the mods i plan on doing to it, but do any of them? =P I just cant leave well enough alone, but thats why we are here!

The truck came stock w/ a TBI 305, 700r4, and NP208, for this winter all i am worried about is swapping in the new 400, rebuilding the tranny and the t-case and getting it to drive again, it has been in the garage all summer, and last winter while i set aside the money for a new cooling system, and the parts for the tranny, t-case and exhaust. I have a 12bolt and Dana 44 set of axles that will eventualy be locked, and disc'ed and tucked under the truck w/ some 33X15.50 18's, but that will be another year or so i would imagine. I also want to rig up a divorced np205 tucked up above the bottom of the frame, w/ skidplates and equal length front/rear driveshafts. I'll get some pics of the stuff so far and post em up. The truck is a super clean southern truck, its nice not breaking evrey bolt you take out of the thing like you would one that has seen the harsh NYS winter salt. Thanks for any help w/ my questions, and sorry for rambling on....and on....and on... I was just out bustin' some nuckles working on it, all thats left to pull the engine is 1 pesky tranny bolt and the motor mounts.

nysi inspector here . basicly its technicly stock style routing from factory. and as long as there is a cat in place and exaust flows threw it then fine. and if has a.i.r pump then needs to be there. and most of this all runs off the emmisions sticker on the core suport that shows emmissions routing and equipment.

but i have seen most shops let true duels fly by as long as thay both have a cat in place.

now if me i would do headers like listed then y pipe and 1 cat . save some money on 1 cat and if not sized correctly the cat wont heat up and work correctly. lots of 2 cat customs run wrong size cats and thay dont work 100%. there is a cfm kind of rating on them as to the size of the motor. so check it out.

dont forget if headers full length you need a 3 wire heated o2 if your o2 is placed more than 12" from motor as to loss of heat. but i bet the fuel injection kit states this all.

p.s. were are you at in ny? if i havent asked before. sounds like my kind of project you got going.

Thanks for the input. I fear it will be hard to get it inspected even w/o my problems w/ a cat. The intake setup is mainly a "race application only" item, it doesnt have all the crappy emmisions reducing stuff on the original motor. Its not gonna stop me from getting this project done, and i definetly want more power than the 305 is going to allow me. I guess i'll just do it the way i realy want to, and see what i end up with. I pulled the motor yesterday, and it came out nicely, especialy for my first motor pull all by myself. Having the front clip off helped a lot. The motor crane i barrowed leaks, so i had to keep pumping it up as i checked clearance and wires and such. that was a pain having the motor keep wanting to settle back into the chassis. I'll have pics up soon. I live in a small town in between Oneonta and Binghamton NY, near Sidney. Thanks for the input.
