gonna build a suburban, at some point of the build, gonna throw in a d-60/14 bolt with 4.56's and 35's.... should i be looking for a suburban with an overdrive or without? very few 3/4 tons with th400, lots of 1/2 tons with the 700r4 here in cali.... would prefer the th400, but not sure if it would be geared too low with only 35's and 4.56's. And if i get a 700r4, how well do they hold up? moderate wheeling...

i wouldnt go with a TH400 if ur going to keep it none O.D. they SUCK gas and power like it is there job. i dont no y but everyone that has one around here tells me. i would go with a TH350 and if ur trying to figure out what ur RPMs will be, go to here, u can compare different set ups side by side. http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

1991 3/4's had the 4L80E, fwiw.

Otherwise, can't tell you -- never had an OD tranny, only TH350's and 400's.

Presuming you're gonna stick with a 350 engine (can't get the 454 in a 4WD), a TH350 would do you fine. On a big block you'd want the strength of the TH400.

Should put a cooler on an auto regardless, especially for wheeling.

OD trans is fine if kept cooled , and is a good rebuild with all the newer upgrades and changes included .

Still using mine , it went from my 83 right into my truggy .

o ya, 700s will be fine, just dont do a truck pull with 400hp,38s and 3.73s:crazy: ull end up driving home in 1st gear only and ordering a new tranny and punching urself for not putting in the 5.13s that were sitting there.

Find a '91 V2500 (3/4ton) with the 4L80E overdrive trans.

FWIW, I'm in the middle of a swap, putting a 4L80E into my '90 V2500, getting rid of the TH400. I'll post up results after it's done. I've got a stupid busy schedule, so it may be another week or two before I can spend the time on it.

If you want OD Try to find a sub 88 or newer. After 1987 the 700 had all the upgrades and were a better stronger trans than eariler ones. As said above 91s and up 3/4 ton have the 4l80e which is a good strong trans.
For a 700 you need a good cooler and keep the fluid clean and change at least once a year

Cool, I herd this too about the 700R's. Glad my 1/2 ton is an 89'. Would love to have a 91' though.

Yeah i've been looking for a 3/4 ton (either 89 or 90), but i guess ill broaden my search for a 91 or even a half ton. I dont plan on adding much power over stock since i live in the smog nazi state of california. I had a line on a very clean 90 for cheap, but it was stolen and stripped (who would have thought) so now i'm looking for something. either way, a fat tranny cooler and a trans temp gauge are going in whatever i get. My biggest reason for asking is that i wasnt sure if a 700r4 was worth getting, i'll try for a 91 3/4 ton, but not having much luck so far

I have one and love it :D

OD is okay.. to be honest I run around in 3rd unless I go above 60mph(even with stockish tires), no noticeable effect on my fuel economy, but it seemed to feel better power wise in the hills around here at 50-55mph.

I have an '89 3/4 ton suburban with a 6.2, th400, 35's, and 4.10 gears. I am dying for OD on the highway, especially I5. My 6.2 is down right now, planning on rebuilding with the turbo sitting in my garage, a NV4500, and 4.56's or 4.88. Wish I could win the lotto.
