I would like to add on board air for tools, airhorns, and some airbag helper springs and have a question. I have read the York instal write up and will probably try to go that route for a nice budget build. But I saw an alternative on a rerun of TRUCKS! yesterday. It showed an electric compressor kit from Extreme Outback, but when I went to their website I saw that they also have a engine mounted, belt driven compressor. I was wondering if anyone had used this before or your thoughts on this unit. Also I was thinking of using their accessories to set up the system (air tanks, relays, pop off valve, etc.) What would be a good place to look for budget alternatives to these. Home Depot or something like that?

that is the compressor I got from an Astrovan with a 4.3
bolts right up using the 4.3 bracket to my 77 chev 350
I paid $14.95cdn plus 14% tax
I had to use a waterneck and upper rad hose from a fullsize Van to clear it, hose size depends on the year so look for the waterneck to match
I used 77 van upper rad hose part number

this is simple stuff and dirt cheap

that is fill plug, drain is on the rear face under the air in/outlets
compressor has 'York' in big letters and some asian name in the fine print
 
Oh okay, so what year Astro did these come on? What were they used for? Air system or a/c compressor? Their website had a mention of these being used on the Military Hummer so it would be really cool that they also came on a simple minivan.
 
MJ, do you happen to have any pics of the bracket setup? I am curious if it would clear my brackets on my LT1.
 
I'd be interested in pics too. I just searched through the partsamerica.com websites looking at the a/c compressors for Astro and none of the compressors look like the pic above. Infact I even looked at several different GM cars/trucks of the same era and they all use the same type of a/c compressors and none are like the picture above. So a picture of what you have would be very helpful.
 
what year LT1?
I grabbed the older V belt Astrovan one to match my 1977 engine
mounts above PS pump on driver's side
I also grabbed a dual V water pump pulley off a random GM Cutlass/Malibu type 80s car and a water neck from a fullsize van
while I was on the FS van I grabbed the PS pump brackets and remote style res from one as well

no digi camera now so SOL on the image guys
I was Pick-A-Part cruising and saw these.
summer sale $14.95 for any AC compressor
also found one on a 351M ford van that will go on the 79 bronco project

the rear fittings differ slightly from the red image
there is a small threaded cap about tire valvestem size facing forward under each fitting

I am using oil, not sure why they chose to use a grease nipple there

next time I will grab the matching pressure switch from the accumulator rather then hunt one down later
the one from the ford has an adjustment screw under the wire plug
 
94 LT1. Those engines have a completely different bracket and pulley system than any other SBC, with all accesories primarily on the passenger side and the drivers head mostly free. I wonder if that compressor on the Astro is Canada only? I am also thinking of a 70's long compressor. I have read on PBB of good results with those for OBA.
 
pretty much any AC compressor will work jus' fine
 
So does that mean that I could just use The same style a/c compressor that I already have (77 style about a foot long) for my onboard air project? BTW I figured out that the pic above is the same style compressor as used on the Volvo by looking at pics on partsamerica.com forget whick series though.
 
Biggest problem with using just any old air compressor from an AC application is many of them do not have lubrication for the pump seperate of the Freon. Eventually you burn up the pump. Pictured above it has a fill plug for pump lubrication so its much better for onboard air.
 
So should I just look for the york off the volvo? I went to the yards around here yesterday and couldn't find any on the Astro. The Extreme Outback setup looks really good but not sure if I would want to spend that much money just to have new parts.
 
Yorks are popular b/c they have their own oil sump. Burning them up isn't as likely as with a rotary type like the pic above. The York's I've seen on Volvos are some of the smallest York's made. I'd look for a full sized anything with a York for the donor. If you can find one off a motorhome that would be even better. Do some searching as the way to ID the 3 different common York displacements is well documented.
 
it would be kinda Jeep to get a compressor from a Volvo to go on a Chevy
smarter idea would be to get a compressor from a chevy that bolts up with no fabrication
