Do all York and RV2 compressors require an oil separator on them? If so, what is the advantage of running one of these other compressors over say a Harrison that would have come stock in our trucks?

I'm looking to install OBA with a belt driven compressor, but if I have to install an oil / air separator, I don't see why I should go find a York or something instead of just using the Harrison compressor that is already on the engine.

Umm, Yorks are oiled internally, so no they don't need an oil separator.

You're thinking of the stock compressors which use the refrigerant as lubricant, so when used as OBA they require external oiling and then an oil separator.

Though strictly speaking I would filter the output of any compressor...

Thats what I thought too, but I read a magazine article on OBA, and they mentioned that all compressors (even yorks) expel oil when they run.

I have an RV2 (think V-twin York with a sump) ready to be installed, but the hassle of installing it over the stock Harrison may not be worth the extra effort for a couple extra CFM of air-flow

Well, that'd be trued for any oiled compressor, be a bit of blow-by in the cylinder(s) prolly ... you should be running a filter on the line anyway, which should take care of it.

Full-on oil separator would be to re-use the oil for those compressors that aren't internally oiled, i.e. the stock one, so sure, you get extra oomph from the York/whatever, but you don't have to replumb and make an external oiler as you would for the stock.

You WILL need a coalescing filter to remove the oil from the air line. When the coalescing filter becomes full you just need to put a container under the bottom and drain it then dump it back into the York compressor. There is a mod you can do to a York to prevent most of the oil bypass that occurs but you will always get some oil in the air line so this is why you need a coalescing filter.
