So after the last month or two trying to deal with my engine/tcm codes I know I need a scanner that has an actual capability to work with my truck and my two modern cars. I've mentioned before I'm using a low end Innova scanner and it doesn't even clear codes correctly for monitoring which sequence the codes reappear etc.

I need a reader that can read live data, clear codes and actually tell me what's going on.

Hopefully someone can point me in a direction on here? What have you had luck with? I'm also not looking to spend a fortune.

Thanks

All my stuff is gm but I'd like a good all around unit. I'll check that out. Is it a hand held?

Torque pro is a very powerful app. You would be very surprised what you can see and do. Check out the torque pro forum for details. There are a ton of GM specific PIDs.

The ELM is a $20 Bluetooth adapter.

Just checked it out on Amazon 9$! Hard to belive this works I'm gonna check out the app

Reviews look good but I'm skeptical whether this will work with my Allison. She's a mean mistress...

I am doubtful of that functionality. If I recall, I could monitor TCC slippage, gear, and trans temp. I don’t recall any other transmission specific PIDs.

That's one of the bigger reasons I need something better. It's really tough to get my friend to make house calls with his $500 scanner programmer and I'm broke but when the tcm throws a code I need him to clear it after I make chamges

There is a better bluetooth adapter that is $79 and works with torque pro and other apps.
It covers engine codes and also trans, abs, a/c and other stuff in modern cars.
I will try and find it for you and post a link.
You can even use it for remote start

Oh wow I did see a few others but I really don't know much about em. Hoping you guys had first hand experience with them that actually work

I'll second the bluedriver OBD2 reader. On my 2003 Silverado and my father's 2006 Yukon it's worked really well. Its read body codes as well as powertrain and engine codes. I'm not sure if it can read anything from the Allison or Duramax though.

Update: I went ahead and got the BlueDriver and downloaded the application.
So far it connects well and reads everything from the pcu. So far I've only used it to clear the stored codes so I could read which ones came back first. So far it's just 0134/0154 returning in 10 miles which is inactivity from both o2 sensors. I have to figure out how to bench test both new o2 sensors before they are replaced.
Bare in mind this pcu is wiped clean by howellefi.com and the harness has been reworked. So far they've recommended switching sides/plugs but the driver side won't reach.
I haven't had any tcm codes Return or at least any I can see to tell if this reader works with that.
