I had a 83k5 with 225k on the clock when my 700r4 gave it up 
. That wasn't the first rebuild though according to PO. My transmission man told me that the 3rd gear 1:1 clutch has twice the holding power of the OD, 4th gear. and to use 3rd for towing or in mountains where the transmission has to work harder.
