Odd '91

Just bought a '91 K5 with a couple of different things about it. It has a 2 headlight system instead of four. 6 lug wheels also. From the factory as gasoline or CNG. Was run as a fleet vehicle with CNG and gas. The grill looks like the military version. Very utilitarian inside (I like it) to include no lights at all in the engine compartment. My guess is they pulled it off of the assembly line for military models and put it into service as a fleet vehicle. Has anyone had any dealings with or seen one of these? Also, 6-lug?(3/4 ton?)

well 6 lug is factory and correct, no it is not a 3/4 ton lol


and why would there be lights under the hood ?

what were you expecting to find under the hood ?

some members may wish to see you post rpo codes from the label in the glovebox

That 2 headlight frontend is just like the stripped down crew cabs . Probably just a basic model . As late as the early 90's models people still ordered cars and trucks sometimes , their way , without buying whats on the lot . Some still do . Maybe it came that way

The Scottsdale package came with the 2 headlights.

That was just a basic model Blazer. Only the Silverado Package( Ithink0 had the 4 headlight system. Chances are it was probably a State Park vehicle or something to that effect. A friend in CA bought a 91 that is similar to what you are describing and his had a roll bar just behind the half cab.

There was an optional small courtesy/help light available under the hood. It was a small light with a long cord that could be rolled up into a centeral housing (if that makes sense).

My '90 has that. it is actually very useful, but does not come on automatically when the hood is opened. It has a switch and a couple feet of cord. Like a small trouble light.

As far as the K5, I looked at a couple of those when shopping for my Burb. Government fleet vehicles.

Sounds like a base model government vehicle. My K5 was a forest service truck but I was lucky and they ordered the silverado package instead of a plain base model.

'91 will have 30-spline axles front & rear. Also will have the VSS on the t-case (NP241), electric speedo, and probably ABS.

I'm guessing the grill looks like one on my '91

Yes, looks exactly like yours. It's the only one I've seen in my little area. Ignorant question #2: What's the "VSS" on the transfer case (tag says it's it's a 241 A T-case)? Yes on the rear ABS. Don't know about the electric speedo.

Rather than a gear-driven speedo cable & odometer, the '91 has a Vehicle Speed Sensor in the t-case that produces an electric pulse.

VSS = vehicle speed sensor, it's basically an electric switch on the t-case that sends a signal to the speedo. Like U2Slow said, you should have an electric speedo (90 & 91).
