The shifter shaft for my 700r has leaked, its where the actual column shifter attaches to the tranny. Ive replaced the seal but its still leaking some.

Now for the odd part. I was under there checking things out for a trip coming up. I seen fluid on the shifter shaft and everything there and there was a small puddle on the ground directly under this. Problem is, it wasnt tranny fluid!?! WTF!!!!

I dont see any fluid "riding" the shifter linkage to this point, I have no idea what this fluid is, It looks like really thinned out motor oil or even brake fluid, but this is way under the truck and no where near the brake system and I checked the brakes, master cylinder, booster, etc. Nothing is running down.

This is very odd. Any ideas?

Well, what does it taste like?

Had a similar thing happen to my Jeep many years ago. The rear wheel bearings were not lubed from the rear end, so when I saw this big dark stain running out of the dual wheel adapter, down the side of the wheel and across the concrete, I was concerned.

I called my mechanic who built the Jeep, and he said there was no way anything should be running out of there.
Just in case, he said he had to make a run out past my house and he would stop in to make sure it was safe to drive.

He got there, checked everything over, could not see anything wrong. Or where that stuff came from.
Nothing was loose, so he told me to go ahead and drive it in carefully and he would check it out.

As he was getting ready to leave, my dog came trotting up, cocked his leg, and made a big muddy stain out of the dual wheel adapter, down the side of the other tire, and across the concrete........

Heh..yea, this has the feel and texture of either oil or brake fluid and its directly under the leak spot on the shifter shaft. They just paved the parking lot and im the first one to park there, so I know its from me. Just very odd.

Brake master cylinder. Fluid runs down the booster, drips on the column, then down the shift linkage

thinned lite brown oil looking sounds like brake fluid to me as wellit will collect dirt on its way down torward the tranny.there are brake lines crossing the linkage under and to the frame that goes to the rear brakes.maybe sprung a small leak.follow it from the bottom up and see where the wetness stops.theres your leak.

I just looked. The only wet spot is from the shifter shaft. Everything brake related from the brake booster, master cylinder and all lines are DRY. Its not running down the shifter rod from column to tranny, that is all bone dry. I guess just the tranny fluid hitting the pavement is turning it brown. The fluid at the shifter shaft is red (trans fluid) so I know thats still leaking. oh well. I guess Ill just keep an eye on it.

maybe the seal is not seated all the way.or seal is wrong size.do you have movement from the shift shaft itself?that will wear out the seal lil by lil til it starts leaking again if the shaft moves and its worn inside the tranny.
