Oddball 10 bolt spindle nut?

Went to service the hub bearings on my 84 k5 blazer (military m1009) and learned that it doesn't have the normal spindle nuts that I've seen. Anyone recognize these?

Looks like the axle gear from the locking hub. Are you sure you have all of the locking hub removed?

Yep, both gears from the hub came out together as usual. Both hubs are the same way.

There's nothing on the stub shaft splines. That tiny diameter spindle nut and the 6 pointed part that sits behind it are on the spindle. The typical 4 point spindle nut tool is too large of a diameter, slips right over it.

I’ve never been in a cucv 10 bolt but I’ve never seen anything like that in any other 10 bolt or d44. Can you turn the part with the rectangular notches with a chisel or screwdriver?

Once you get all that out be sure to post pics of it.
 
every few years this weird one comes up . i am sure the guys on steel soldiers would know . but just get it out and get a reg set of civi nuts for it .

Yep, a tiny 6 lug.

Thanks for the reminder about steel soldiers, forgot to check there. The hub socket that's needed is a Kent Moore J-34616. Doesn't look like it's common among the military m1009's either. Will post up pics when it gets torn apart next weekend (socket should be here thursday)

Yep. CUCV 10-bolt axle. Matches the description in the TM manual. It also matches what I had in my truck. I thought that was the norm for M1009 axles. :dunno:

At least not from the few threads on steel soldiers I read. Last m1009 I tore into had the regular nuts on its front axle (but had been civilian owned for years). Maybe it had been switched as well :dunno:
 
Well that socket lasted all of 10 seconds. Nut is certainly over torqued. Squared up, 4 teeth sheared off last 1 bent and started tearing.

I have seen some that had a little allen head screw that locked it in place

Didn't see one, and the military TM's make no mention of it (only mention that the 84 m1009's use a different spindle nut that is smaller). Gonna order up some of the standard 4 pin spindle nuts to replace these with and try to find another hub socket that's stronger material.

No, it's a standard thread. I removed mine by placing a single punch in one of the holes and gently tapping it sideways. It's not supposed to be tight enough to shear tabs, unless that socket was of very poor quality.

Be sure to let us know whether the standard nuts fit. I'd expect them to match, but I haven't personally tried swapping them.
 
could there be a lock plate with a tab bent over? I have also seen the spindle nuts with a small 4-40 or 6-32 Allen socket in the outer nut....

like others have said, a punch or chisel and a few whacks of a hammer should knock the outer nut loose...
 
No locking washer tabs, the spindle nut has a smooth exterior (by touch, can't get the best visual being that it's in the hub).

First socket wasn't of very high quality, but the options were either it or the other one (black steel) at roughly 3 times the cost. If it was torqued near where it should be then the first socket would have been fine, but me using a 2ft long ratchet broke that socket before the nut moved at all.

Not my first stuck hub nut, but this little shit is fighting harder than most class 8 truck hubs that were badly abused. Maybe pick up another 10 bolt front axle so I have some spare spindles on standby is these threads are damaged haha
 
I hear ya,,, I have had to cut a few of them off with the blue tool, or split them with an air chisel...either way, most of the time you can dress the threads with a small file and chase the threads with a new nut...

I just half-way remembered something you need to know. There is a square key inserted into one of those 6 slots. I remember it being a pain to extract. Hard to see, harder to grab (I used a magnet and a small metal probe). The TM manual illustration is useless. But there is a key locking that nut into place.

I wish I were more help. But take another look inside each one of those slots.
