I picked up a 74 K10 today, 4 speed trans and 203 t/case. Is this an oddball combo or was it common for that year? Also what would be the spline count, 10 spline or something different? The bearings seem to be shot in the t/case and I want to put a 205 in it's place.

Fairly rare, it was only an option in 74 and 75. It is 10 spline and is relatively desirable because 10 spline SM465's are so common and those parts allow you to use a doubler without messing with the trans.

The adapter is stout, better than most. The 10 spline input gear in the 203 is very prone to wear and, in my experience, are bad more often than not. They aren't available new.

So, if they're in good shape, the adapter and 203 are worth something for a guy looking to do a doubler.

What makes you think the bearings are bad?

On the rear of the case the center of the bottom cover is gone. I'm figuring that there is a removable portion to this cover, I can see the shaft turn. lot of clanking coming from the t/case when I turn the driveline.

Will a 205 bolt up to the tranny with the right adapters?

The trans output is the same as the super common 465/205 setup, you'd need a 10 spline NP205, 10 spline drive sleeve and '84 and older 465/205 (stock '84 and older parts).

Yep, a 10 spline 205 with the adapter for a sm465 will bolt right up.
It's what I did to mine when my 203 grenaded, I sold the 203 for $100 and bought a 205 for $100 bolted it in in a few hours, then got my shafts changed to the right lengths.
