So I'm looking at a late 80's K5, the seller has told me the odometer doesn't rollover after 99,999.9...I have not known this to be the case in any of the K5 Blazers. Am I wrong? The truck is showing somewhere around 84,000 - 86,000 miles. The numbers don't seem to be out of whack (not lined up) however you'd say that...any insight?

They roll over
I thought so...I know to look for the numbers being out of alignment...but it doesn't appear like they are...I mean this thing is seriously all stock like a time capsule so it's possible the mileage is original...I'll probably take the gamble...it'll be a wicked restore!

Well how late 80's?

At some point, I can't remember when, GM went to an odometer with six positions, so rolling over would probably never be a concern lol.

In any case, a speedometer swap would be super easy, I'd not go by the speedometer alone anyways.

The 1990 model year was when they went to the electric speedometer they also moved to the 6 digit odometer on squarebody trucks. It's the easy identifier for an electric speedo cluster.

Seems to me I read in a Haynes manual many years ago that when the speedo rolls the dials should show a white flag in between the numbers. Consider the source of my terrible memory so good luck!

On the 90-91 clusters there are some deals between the dials. It’s not that they change when the odometer rolls but if they are tampered with.

I reset my odometer to zero when I rebuilt the cluster. Doing so without tripping the flags was a little challenge but not impossible. I ended up taking the whole odometer assembly out of the speedometer and rolled it forward. You can’t technically roll one backwards the way the gearing is set up. So I held the items between the dials between my thumb and finger with one hand and spun the numbers with the other. Didn’t take much time at all.

Before anybody panics over altering an odometer reading my title was marked not actual mileage already. Since the whole truck was being redone mechanically I wanted to reset for ease of keeping track. Crossed 31,000 on the trip to AZ last month.

I was trying to remember the deal with the white flags thanks for the update.
I watched the odometer in my truck roll over twice which is pretty cool!!

I watched my odometer roll over once on my big rig, it's a six digit. :pimp:
It went 1788656 before the engine gave because someone didn't tighten the oil plug.
And no it wasn't me, it was 3 months after I sold it.

There are six digit odometers before 1990. I have never been able to figure out the rhyme or reason for why some trucks got them, but most did not.
