Will a 89 OEM Corvette CD head unit fit a 89 K5?

Are there any OEM units that will? It looks like a 1.5 DIN slot.

I dont like the controls on aftermarket stuff.

I would check out the adapter plugs for aftermarket radios . If you see one that fits the same rig you have , and some other vehicles too , then those are the vehicles with compatible radios to your factory plugs :)

If it looks similar to this one it might work http://cgi.ebay.com/GM-DELCO-CD-PLA...4|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50

This earlier design chassis should have the right provisions for the bolt on tabs/brackets like the k5 radio. The most important thing to look out for is the BOSE stereos as they had external amplifiers and are a real pain to wire up in something except the 'vette they were designed for. Finding any vehicles in these years with a factory cd player is pretty rare but a 'vette or possibly a Cadillac would be your best options.

I saw that one and a couple more on Ebay. They ain't cheap!!! Some had even had EQ's.

The stereo shop heads are nice, with several different input sources. I especially liked the USB plug to pull music from a flash drive. Pretty slick and very easy to load up.

I will pull my cassette head out and get numbers and the plug arrangement. The vendors that use Ebay look like they will have any plug adapter needed. I'm lucky to have the 89 with a DIN arrangement, instead of the older head units that were held in by the tuning and volume knobs.

I'm driving back to the Seattle area next week from Arkansas. I've got a portable CD player cobbled up to my Blazer so I can listen to books on CD and some music. It'll get me home! I'll do the research and get a new CD head in there soon. If you see a RED/White K5 headed North on the CA coast, honk and wake me up!

So just to drag this back...

...I'm closing in on a deal on a '89 K5. Am I reading this correctly and they DON'T have the old double knob and small display 3 hole setup like the older trucks?
I've lusted after '89-91 trucks for years but can't say as I've ever been inside one long enough to notice the stereo.

No, they don't. I'm not sure what year they got away from the old knob style decks and went to the newer double din size. Here's a pic of my old '89 Suburban radio for reference.

Huh...nifty. Goes in the same spot on the dash?

I think it'd have to be '89 they made the change. Seems like I looked at a '88 a while back and it still had the two dials and small display.

Thats the same as the radio that was in my 91 S10

Really, if you are handy making brackets and splicing wires, any stock ish head unit could be made to work. The GM size in these (and 90's ) trucks was Din and a half, not double din. There are a COUPLE of aftermarket radios for this size that you could look into. Really, even if you don't like aftermarket stuff, there has to be one out there you could live with. Putting in a stock one would be more effort than an aftermarket one. Aftermarket one you just buy a dash kit and wiring kit (if you don't want to cut factory harness) and mount up. You can find some CHEAP aftermarket ones now too, with USB or AUX in for an ipod.

But if you want a stock one, as long as oyu can hack the plug off whatever you take it out of (the plug that goes inot the back of the unit), you can make just about anything work. Just standard constant hot, switched hot, ground, illumination, antenna, and spkr wires. Not rocket science.

It must have changed in '89 as my '88 was the old knob style, unless they varied by trim levels as well. I've never seen (or at least noticed) a K5 with a din.5 stock unit.

89-91 of this body style got the new style. Guess GM must have gotten tired of having the old shaft style radios. Dated the look of the trucks a lot too.

My '88 had the knob style, and it most certainly dated the look of the interior. However, the thing was fully digital and was just as good as the GM 1.5 models. The only reason I replaced it was because the RF speaker channel did not work and one of the preset buttons did not work. I kept it though, in hopes of finding someone to repair it.

Well, the big thing at the time was CD's were coming and everyone had gone from the "two shafts and small displays" to the big ass radios that every car had from then until fairly recently. The little old radios just weren't cutting it.

'88 must have been the change over period. I had a late year '88 with the later style head unit. It did not have the knob type.
