Hey all, the recent thread about pics of rattle can paint jobs had me wondering. How many cans does it take to get the job done? I'm not looking for a world class paint job, I just want to cover my current 17 color paint job with a flat black job. Thanks for the input.

damn it you tease!! ;-) I thought it was an aswer to my question! lol

Took about twelve to do my K-5...............several coats though.

Rustoleum

I had an old light blue
F-100 that the light blue rustoleum was an exact match for.

I KNOW I KNOW!!!...OOHHH PICK ME PICK ME! I KNOW THE ANSWER!

answer..it takes as many as it takes! :D

lol
sorry, I'm bored..

lets see..well you have seen my truck..it took 3 cans of primer to do my hood and fender...so..hmmm..maybe a dozen..depends on how even you want it, and what color you chose..a lighter color will take more to cover the old paint

oh yeah...did ya remember to tighten them ubolts?

ok..done highjackin your thread

please drive foward

Exterior of a K5-I guess a 12-15 cans to give it a couple of coats. If you want half-way even coverage you had better plan on several cans of primer first to cover the multicolors underneath. Scuff it good with some 3M pads first and invest in some paint prep or some sort of wax and grease remover to get it clean. Even with the best preparation, don't expect rattle can enamel to stand up to the elements for very long.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a Wagner power sprayer or reasonable facsimile and a gallon of paint???
Then you would have a painted truck (more or less) and still have a power sprayer to paint the deck, fence, and garage.
Get that paintin' done and get out wheelin' sooner.

I think most checker/auto zone type places sell crappy paint sprayers that are just good enough to get through a car or two for under $40. As long as you have an air compressor that is. If not, buy one of their junk compressors for $50 too. Those are good to charge up before you go out wheeling anyway. Just in case of a flat or if you let out air..... i'm done rambling

EDIT

Ohohohhhhhhh.... Go rent the stuff at home depot. There ya go. Rent it and abuse it and make it all good!!! yea me :woot:

hey doc..google just gave me an ideal..lets go halves on renting a paint gun and compressor from golden green or hasen bros..then we can paint our trucks at your place...just get some big cheap tarps from the bargin barn..make a little make shift booth..and away we go!..oh yeah one of my other many talents is that i used ti work at a body shop, and i know how to prep and paint :D

Think i used near 20 of gray primer on the k-10 for it's paint. Not all brands of gray primer are the same gray.

I used 4 6packs on a 1ton crew cab.... 4x6x$3.50=:doah:
use Krylon ULTRA FLAT BLACK good coverage per can, even over white/rust, doesnt come off w/press washer.
and be sure to hit you lp no sense letting to man ruin a good paint job

well the numer of cans that it took to rattle my truck was about a case of MGD... then it took about 20 cans of flat black...Never took a pic of the truck that color though.... was cool.. went wheelin.. got the truck scratched...someone back in the woods going... OOOH LOOKIE AT YER PAINT...

so I reached in the back seat... shook the can - re-painted the spot and went... viola... you should have seen the dudes face...

also got these stickers from pep boys... had a big skeleton ripping out of the side of the truck.. .with bullet holes and blood dripping....

I would pull up next to people and to see their faces was sweet.... :cool1:

or you can do it the way the ARMY does it, roll it on . I went to home depot and got a gallon of flat black exterior paint and a roller, it went on nice and even, its super tuff paint, and it looks like it was sprayed on. it comes out ultra flat. good luck

I dont see why everyone wants to spray paint there trucks... figure 15 cans $4 each... thats $60 just for the paint go to a good hardware store and pick up a gallon of 2 part urathane for $70 and have a much better looking alot more durable paint job granted you have or can barrow a gun to spray it just my $.02 BTW check out BLP paint stores and dealers for that paint

well duh, spray cans are much more rugged... :D

it has to do a lot with touch up too like mentioned earlier...

I think I was able to do my old 81 Blazer with 8 cans 5 years ago. Mine was a faded silver primer grey ride that I sanded and sprayed Rustoleum Satin Black. A real high quality job I did in a weekend start to finish. Just went to work Monday with a different color truck.

It took 23 cans to paint my 87 suburban, 19 to paint my 79 blazer. I went to wal-mart and got the $1 cans of cheap crap. Any time I wash the mud off the truck, I crack open a can and spray any scratches or rust that are coming through. So, its a $19 paint job, and for $1 every car wash, it stays new looking. :D
