I have an Edelbrock Performer carb. Part Number 1406, 600cfm. and I took my truck off-road for the first time with that carb, and while I was going up a hill that was marginally steep the engine cut out... I have read of this happening do to the gas running out of the carb, or something like that. Anyway, I heard you can do something to make it not do that anymore, without having to buy a carb built for off-road applications. Does anyone know what I could do to fix this problem???

Edelbrock makes an "offroad kit" for it I think.

Its never going to be a great offroad carb, its just not designed for it.

If you are going to do any steep crawlin then you might want to look into some sort of injection otherwise you will never be happy.

theres a couple things you can do to play work with it. you can re-jet and play with the needles, or also you can get a marine spacer that is angled, it will run normal on the flats and when you go up a grade the carb will sit flat longer.

Edelbrock carbs are not known to do well offroad. You can tweak them to work ok but extreme angle is probably never going to happen. If you want a carb that will do better offroad look at a Qjet or a Holley Truck Avenger. I am not sure how the Edelbrock designed for offroad does but I have seen Qjets run pretty well almost on there sides. I have also seen TA carbs do well offroad but IMO the Qjet is the best for most capable carb offroad.

The best answer is fuel injection if you are going to be seeing lots of angles. This is the more expensive answer though so if you don't do much offroading it might not be the best answer for you. I did a Tuned Port Injection setup on my truck and have literally had it running like a top with the truck laying on its side.

x2 on that note!!the frustration of a carb aint worth it!!

Alright, well as of now Its still a street truck and I just want to climb some hills 45-65 degree angles... nothing too extream. I just did the 14bolt-ff conversion and also added discs in the rear, so I just want to take it where the 10-bolt couldnt haha. As far as Tuneport injection, do they make kits? Do you need to have a computer??

you got to keep your foot on the gas, the closer to full throttle the better ;) :D

Haha, when your going up a steep 3 teared hill you have to slow down! Other wise I'll put my front end into the next incline...

I have played around with AFB/1406 carbs and tryed to make them perform offroad. I could make them run better. But culd never get one to work as good as a Q-jet offroad.
If you want to keep your 1406 go here:http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/carter.php
I have done all these mods to the AFB/1406 carb. They will make them run acceptable offroad and work better in off camber hills ect.

After doing the mods could you climb hills you previously couldn't?

The Edelbrock "Offroad" kit, consist of a spring loaded needle and seat, not gonna help in his situation.

You could try to lower the float, and maybe play with the hanger's, but the best option is either a Q-jet, or Truck Avenger.

Yeah... I have been looking into carbs the last few days and reading reviews, the truck avenger sounds pretty awesome compared to what I have heard about holley's, I have never personally run a holley tho. Here is a link to an article:

http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/holley_truck_avenger/index.asp

I found it very informative!!! And its 3 pages long haha.. I am also looking into possible an L98 TPI but that all depends on how much I could get one for.

I got my Truck Avenger for 308, versus up to 500 for a Q-jet, and I have been very hapy with it so far.

grab a protracter. 65 degrees is steep.

injection works best, but if your engine wasn't made for it, it's can be a pain to ever get running right. quadrajet or truck avenger are both good options. i've only managed to stall the engine one time. i accidentally jumped the truck a few feet in the air (night mudding woohoo) and came down hard. the engine sputtered and died. otherwise, that q-jet is solid

I had a friend with a 350 and Edelbrock 4 barrel who put a fuel pressure regulator on and would turn it down to 2 when offroading and he had a lot less problems with it then.

I have wheeled with my 1406 with the off road kit and supposedly other mods done to it but no angled spacer and I have the dent to prove it. It would run ok up to maybe 25 degrees and then right when you needed it the most poof. Which is why it now sits on the floor in the garage.

On the street it did great but at an angle for any length of time and it would die out after a short time. This was with a stock fuel pump on the engine also.

fuel injection even TBI is wonderful compared to carb. I just swapped in the entire engine out of a 93 suburban.

Good luck.

Yeah I kinda guestimated the angle haha I was tired i think... :P Well I'm looking into TBI but I realize if I just swap out the intake I'm ganna need all the computer and wiring, and heads... I have some old rochester Q-jets but I they need rebuilding. Newer edelbrocks are way too much money, so I may go with the truck avenger. That 1406 is goin back to the box till I can find a buyer that dont need to go off road!

$500 for a Q-jet? I'm sure there are many companies offering modded/rebuilt q-jets, but I am still running the Q-jet that came stock on my truck.

No need to buy an expensive one, they run awesome without any mods.

You dont have any problem with stalling when climbing hills or hitting bumps at higher speed with a Q-jet?
