Off Road Design

They are valved specific to ORD specs
By whom? Is ORD adjusting the valve rating then selling the shocks? So the bilsteins they sell arent stock? Is this why their $ is a bit more than say Summit or etc?
Just trying to understand what “adjusting valve setting to ORD specs” means.

All I can add is that I love my Bilsteins that ORD sold me. Very comfortable on and off road.

The stock 5125 shocks aren't valved slow enough in my opinion. I went with the 7100 simply cause I could get the valving slower.
5125 goes up to a 255/70 valving last I saw, off the shelf.
My 7100s are valved at 360/80. I figured with softer springs, I'll try the slower valving for the street. Feels good on and off road. I also got them for the heim joint ends for my mounting needs.
So I'm sure if ORD is spec-ing them, they are better for our trucks.

My issue is, I do not want to have to drill into the frame for the mount extenders.
What Im after is removing the ranchos on presently and installing new shocks.
Im not comfortable drilling into the fram, getting the angle and all that properly set up.

I need basically plug and play shocks.
I wont be doing any heavy off roading just street hwy, and some mild desert excursions in AZ

I Dont doubt their products. I would like to purchase from them. Im not keen on installing shock mount extenders, drilling into the frame. I hate outsourcing (labor $ kills it) I guarantee i will mess this up.

Im at the lift point where ORD highly recommends shock extenders for the shock they suggest. 4 inch lift.
Im after plug and play shock replacement.

Is there not a plug and play shock from bilstein that will work on 4 inch lift 37 tires

The reason that they recommend a change in mounting location for larger lifts is because the usable travel of the lift will exceed the usable travel of the shock in most instances (assuming the factory shock mounting is used).

You'll either end up with not enough compression or not enough extension, resulting in using the shock as a bump stop or a limiting strap. Neither is good for a Bilstein shock...

If you aren't going to be using the full travel of your suspension (rock crawling), you would probably be fine sticking a Bilstein in there that is close to centered in its stroke at ride height. I don't know which one that would be, however, so you might have to call ORD and have them make a suggestion.

They realize that not every person that wants to buy parts from them is a serious rock crawler. They will likely explain that a shock shouldn't be the limiting factor to your suspension, and warn you that it is possible to damage the shock if it is too long or too short. You'll say I know, but CK5 said Bilsteins are the bees knees, and I'm not a hardcore wheeler, so please make a recommendation. And then they'll sell you some shocks.

You might need to provide a measurement because not every 6" lift is 6" on every truck, some are taller or shorter based on vehicle weight or lift manufacturer.

And measure both rear shocks at ride height and on level ground. If the axle isn't exactly where Jesus intended then there is a good chance one rear shock could be longer than the other at ride height.

Welp, i agree with you.
i told them my needs and the reply was about extenders.

If they see this thread:
I need shocks for a 78’ blazer with a 4inch lift 37 tires:
My needs are a plug and play shock replacement.
Vehicle use, Daily driving with mild to very mild off roading. No rock crawling or extreme 4x4 ing. I have no desire to drill into my frame to install shocks.
What I gather is I need 9.24 for the front and 11 for the rear. If this is correct they have a customer.

I know people reading this thread, think Im over thinking this. And theyre right, reason being, I keep asking the same questions and get different answers. Which is making this confusing. I am as green as it gets to 4x4 vehicles. My past is dropped C-10’s not lifted anything.

I emailed merrick from merrick garage

ORD,
Bilstein never replied to me. (Which makes me hesitant to buy their product)

Well I have 4 inch lift with stock shock mounting with plain old bilstien from ord. I just drive the thing. I dont need long travel.

Just measure the body on the old ranchos and order some new bilstein shocks with the same length body.

I did. However, on my blazer the same shock is in the front and back which people say is bad for some reason.
I posted the part number for this bilstein some said it was wrong email ORD, more confusion...??!

On truck now
Rancho RS5112 front amd back
Extended: 25.960
Compressed: 16.25
Travel: 9.710

The bilstein I found that is close enough is:
Bilstein B8 5125 Series Shocks 33-185552
Extended 25.93

Compressed: 15.91

With this bilstein others say I need or its highly recommended I use.shock extenders others say I dont need them adding to my confusion.

Look, i know this is probably an irritating thread to read, for guys with experience or even the casual passerby’s. But if I could get a definitive answer ( yes use this bilstein. THis will work without shock extenders and is prefect for your needs) the thread will end.

There you go
10 or 11" stroke front
12" stroke rear

I had 12s in the rear of my truck at ~4-5" of lift. Abused it for years till I went through the bed mounting with a longer shock and above the axle mounts.
