Hey guys, I've got the chance to buy a 6x12 single axle enclosed trailer from my dad for 500 bucks!

It's in really nice shape, just needs some tlc. I'm thinking about building a camping/off road trailer out of it.

Spring over and 33's to match the stance of my truck.

Has anyone ever built an off road trailer out of a enclosed trailer? Anything to watch out for? Is the frame tough enough for it?

I had one for a year. I'm way happier in a roof top tent.

I did live out of my trailer every weekend for a winter while skiing though.

What purpose do you want the trailer to serve?

Kinda like a carry all for camping on the trail, and for carrying kayaks. I'd like to have a mattress or fold down cot. Maybe a small kitchen area towards the back

do you want to take it off road? Cause I can't see that thing handling anything. No offense, but it just seems like it would get destroyed.

No not like down any trails but tall enough to handle being off a paved road and not get hung up all the time.

More of a base camp rig

those trailers unless built to be off road or roof rack capable will not hold up long . there flimsy if that kind of use is done to them .

Yea, my trailer was a bit sturdier than one of those types as it was two full fiberglass layers with foam in between. I had 33s and it did "ok" on washboard road.

My blazer rides hard enough that you drive slow enough for the trailer to be ok.

I found the trailer to be more of a hassle than it was worth and an excuse to pack too much stuff.

If I were you I'd look at a decent roof top tent with racks. James Baroud looks really killer and like they handle enough weight for kayaks. Of course, it may be out of the budget.

Some racks for kayaks on the Blazer and packing appropriately in the rear make camping and off-roading way easier. I have run a full 17 foot mad river canoe on my roof, and three kayaks in the back with the tailgate down with 4 people in the truck.

You could fix that one up a sell for a profit and buy a better starting platform. Or just build a full exo skeleton for it. That would beef it up. But seriously. I want to see a trailer with a fully tied in exo skeleton.

I think you'd suffocate in that thing out in the desert...have to add windows & a roof vent...the above comments are also true too...its not rugged enough for any off roading without a lot of beefing up..

Well I live in KY so not a whole lot of deserts around lol I'm looking for some storage a dry place to sleep and change clothes.

Dragging it down a trail isn't what I want it for.

East coast guys, I'm sure you've spent time on a trail in the mud and muck. It'd be nice to sleep in a bed after being wet and nasty all day.

Have you looked into a teardrop design trailer? They are small, lightweight, and easy to move around. I see a lot of them on YouTube that have been hand built. Most are not too fancy and won't win any beauty contests, but they don't need to be. They just need to be a place to sleep, eat, and camp with. I've considered building one for the last year, but I can't find the time to get it going.

go to expedition portal, there are a lot of people who have built expo trailers from those enclosed trailers.
