I havn't done much to the Blazer, but though some might want ot see my latest project. It's a jeep,I know, but I don't discriminate.
I picked up a set of full steel doors for my wife's Jeep. Her Jeep orig. came with just the soft top and 1/2 doors. She always complained of the cold in the winter so that's the reason for the new doors.
Anyway, picked up a excellant pair of doors and a hardtop for $300.00...only prob. was they were blue and the wife's Jeep is a Metallic Hunter Green.
O.K.,onto the pic's.
Went to my local paint supply with the factory paint code obtained from the plate on the Jeep's firewall.
Got the PPG BC/CC system.
Because there were spots of rust on the old doors I ended up blasting the spots of rust away with my pot blaster.Sorry no pic's of that. Wife didn't want to come near me with the camera when I was doing that.:}
I then cleaned the doors with soap and water and a wax degreaser.
Sanded the orig. blue paint with 320grit and filled some minor scratches with some putty.
I picked up a 2K high build Primer and shot for the 1st time with a REAL spray gun...a cheapo gun...but a real gun. It's a siphon feed,2.0 tip harbor freight type gun.
Ended up useing my mask as the fumes were quite strong.Didn't think they would be that strong. Here I am mixing it up.
Before I shot my 1st coat of primer,I needed to make some kind of enclosure so I didn't coat everything in my garage with primer and BC/CC
I had a spare Furnace fan so I fabbed up a ghetto filter box and attached it to one of the garage windows.
Outside view of squirrel cage. There was very little overspray that actually wasn't caught by the inside filter.
Hung 6mil poly from the ceiling and made two filtetred air intake holes.2nd intake filter is on the left side of the poly curtain, not seen in this pic.
I hung the doors from the ceiling and sprayed 2 coats High Build Primer.I sanded with 400 inbetween coats.
And no...my JD lawn tractor was not in the spray booth when spraying.
I applied a 3rd coat as a Primer Sealer.
Sanded the last coat of Primer with 400grit and then shot the BC.
Oooo...pretty metallic.
Setting up the gun here. You'll note the mutliple attempts(rookie).
Actually in this pic. I was wondering why there was so much more overspray in the air compared to when I sprayed the primer?
Turned out I forgot to open the window
So the fan was going but nothing was being sucked out.
I sprayed the 2nd coat of base too thick and had some runs. This is a driver so I just pressed on.No need for prefection here. The runs were in area's that wouldn't really be noticed.
Tech sheet said I had up to 24hr to apply Clear Coat. I let things sit for about 4hr's.
Garage was heated and was about 80F in there.
So 4hr's pass and in I go for the clear.
Again, 2nd coat of clear went on too thick and I got some BAD runs on the 1st door I cleared.I also had the pressure up too high on the gun and got bad orange peel.
This shot is with the clear on.Metallic base turned out nice!
Whoa...looks like a lake on a mildly windy day.Bad Orange Peel.
So here we are,Son and I, wet sanding the clear.600grt,1000,1500 then finished with 2000
This door was the better of the two so all I did was wet sand and buff it out.
I need to snap some pic's of that yet.
The 2nd door got a 400grit sand and I resprayed the clear on that one. That turned out so smooth all I had to do was buff and hang the door on the Jeep.
I'll get pic's of the finished product tonight and post.
ALL the pic's I took while painting the doors can be seen here.
