like it says. trying to figure out why my m1009 will not start. thanks:waytogo:

Just went though this. I had 6 of 8 bad. Only need to check continuity with a test light or ohm meter. Open - bad, closed - good.

Checking glow plugs.

tm9-2320-289-20 says 1-3 ohms. Tested in block, lead disconnected.

Things change, glow plugs/manufacturers change, the standard we followed was between 0.8-1.2 ohms. I remember we always took them out and tested them, perhaps that was the change in resistance? I don't know, maybe they just wanted us to make sure they wern't mushroomed. Brand new out of the box they tested somewhere in that 0.8-1.2

Just noticed this was about a week old, has it started?

I agree that open is bad, but the plugs can fail as a short, too. Then your batteries are running down, but the cylinders are still cold. You can jump start it all day. That's where the minimum resistance requirement comes from.

it's fine now. Batteries were pretty old. Too bad glow plugs on the one side. got some new Bosch glow plugs. Two new 1000 CCA batteries. Got rid of the glow plug card wired in a manual push button. starts right up perfect every time. Just you to find a place around here that rebuilt starters and I'll be good. I have the 28 MT think it's called in there now.I should've just rebuilt the stock one

Shoulda just swapped over to civillian starter if ya did that much work :D Cheaper.

Push button controller is something I still wanna/needa do. Hate rolling up my windows or doing something with engine off/run position with the glow plugs draining my juice.

got the 28mt since its a better starter. thats a bunch of crap. its junk. stock one is was better.
not sure about other blazers wiring but on a cucv some new wires and a push button done in 30 minutes.

Is a 28MT the gear reduction one?...I have one in my 85 Burb and I was not impressed with its cranking speed, the old "straight" Delco starter in my 82 whips its 6.2 over better IMO..

I may have fried the gear reduction one from cranking it over too long maybe though..

All it took to make my 82 GMC have a manual glow plug switch was to ground one wire off the pushbutton ,and connect the other to the blue wire on the glow plug relay..I pulled the plug off the stock glow pulg controller so it could never send current to the glow plugs again too,not sure if that was nessasary though..

My 85 Burb someone wired up a bit differently, they used a ford starter relay instead of the stock GM glowplug one and connected the glow plug wires to the 5/16" posts on it,and ran a 12V hot wire to the fuse box and push button to energize the relay...

I find replacing glow plugs a real pain in the butt, especially on my burb with A/C..especially when everyone who owned it decided to leave the original ones in it,that were too hard to get at--and are whittled down to nubs where the 3/8 hex once was..not looking forward to chaning those at all..and if they are swelled up--:doah:..might be time to sell it or put a gas engine in it..someone told the guy I bought it from they replaced all 8 glow plugs at one time in the past, but I think they lied..
