Oil blackening.... What does it early?

When we went to synthetic in our minivan. It too became a smoky rattle snake. Had 90k on it. That one was the exact viscosity numbers as it called for.
I've tried going synth in 3 or 4 vehicles now with the same result.
May be amazing in a fresh engine or new car. But switching an old engine over just hasn't worked yet for me.

When I got this truck the guy had forgotten the box of filters at home. He said trust me, your going to need them, and had me follow him 20 miles outside of town to get them. So it sounded like a regular change item to me.
I noticed that in his area, the 2 stations we stopped at only sold Bio diesel. Which I figured was why he said that.
All of our rented diesel stuff at work have big stickers saying NO BIODIESEL. And we had an issue last year where a few of our bigger fuel hungry things started plugging up constantly. Service tech came and said we were using bio. And he was right. FS had given us bio by mistake. They sent someone and sucked it back out of the bigger tanks and replaced it. Problem went away. :dunno:

The few farmers at work said it was all they used and never had an issue. But a half dozen of our generators and a couple man lifts sure didn't like it.
So that may be why he had a pile of filters
I dunno. I just put diesel in, and don't even look what type lol.

Biodiesel has a higher viscosity, it's harder to pump through filters. It gels up, like old diesel in the wintertime. It's not a problem, it's just a different fuel. Just like Ethanol is "mostly" like gasoline. It does the same thing, but has its own quirks. It's an equivalent, not a direct replacement, for dino fuel.

If you take conventional and synthetic oils with the same viscosity rating, they should behave the same, aside from the synthetic being more stable at high temperature (and less prone to smoking).

Apples to apples, you shouldn't notice a difference. Something isn't right if it abruptly changes behavior.

I would believe that an engine started rattling after an oil change, particularly if sludge was removed. That could have a large effect on viscosity. :dunno:

We had bio diesel for @ 10 months, every old truck had issues, esp if they don't run every day. Also the bio diesel didn't play nice with the coatings on many of our truck fuel tanks, we had to remove them and have them cleaned and re-coated. No more Bio diesel in our fleet.

Shady Diesel fuel can "grow" an allege if it sits, this will plug a filter, maybe part of the reason PO had so many filters. Use a fuel stabilizer additive , or drive it so you renew the fuel. Skip the shady fuel stations get reputable fuel.

:haha::rotfl::haha:.

The minivan rattled more when cold with the synthetic. Like a lifter rattle. After warming up it went away. Didn't do it with normal oil, so we went back to it. Problem went away too.

As for diesel, I get it at shell or the Kwik star truck stop.
I haven't looked at shell, but I think Kwik star says bio on it.

All diesel stations sell a mix of petroleum/bio diesel, anywhere from 5-20% bio. Each state is different on the label requirements though (some no requirements, others at 20%, etc).

Most of the soot in the oil comes from around the cylinders. If you wanted to install a set of gapless rings to replace the 2nd ring on each piston it's proven to significantly reduce it. A centrifuge or a fine micron bypass filter would help as well.

5,000-7,500 miles per oil change is standard with the 6.2/6.5. They are harder on oil than other diesel engines due to their low oil volume by comparison and higher compression ratio.

Yeah I wouldn't go more than 5k on my 6.2 but my perkins takes 12 qts, the dual oil filter alone is 2 qts. I used to go 10k on that one.
I go 30 k on my 15 litres dd15 that takes 12 gallons of oil.

When I had my 6.2 I found the best was to stop the oil blacking was a 454 swap. Also cured my bio diesel problems.

Now you know what to do with that extra 454.;)

Can't say it hasn't been thought of. Especially when I bought this diesel for a better mpg work vehicle... But driving it to work and back, plus a little around town I average 8.8 :doah:. Which is what the frickin dually gets.

Now, on a 40mi one way, 2 lane highway trip I've gotten 17.8 there and back. But I wanted it to be better to work and back.

So if this diesel ever chits out it's probably getting an LS.

That 454 will spool that 6.5 turbo quicker.....:rotfl:

Something is not right.
Diesels don't do that bad in slow driving, there's something wrong.

My pickup's 6.2 never gets more than 16 mpg in mixed driving, mostly under 45 mph on rural roads...probably worse if I went 65 mpg on the highways..and its geared pretty high too..it also weighs 6200 lbs empty though..

I've had gas engines get that kind of mileage in 1/2 ton trucks..best fuel sipper I had in a truck was a 229 V6 in a '82 GMC Cabalaro ,that would get 20+ mpg ..but with 2:56 gears it was a slug!..

Had a '80 El-Camino Royal Knight with a 267 V8 and a TH350,2:56 posi that did almost as well too,it too was no dragster on take offs ,but it could cruise at 80 mph at a fast idle smooth as silk ..

My '79 C-10 Bonanza had a 250 six / TH350 and it only got 12-15 mpg ,had 3:08 gears..when I put a 305 in it,it went up to 15+ mpg consistently..

Whats wrong is 406k miles!

Po said it was rebuilt at 300 by the original dude that bought it new. That dude was a travelling salesman so it very much could have been. It has about 35 psi oil pressure idling, and 50 cruising down a normal city street

Both my 6.2 and the VW Jetta diesel I had would turn a fresh oil change's oil coal black about 5 minutes after you ran it...

I just assumed it was "normal",and more than one diesel mechanic said it was..the diesel rated oil has high detergent content and cleans soot off all the engine parts and block and keeps it in suspension in the oil,so it will be drained out later...but some soot always remains ..

According to the sun visor sticker on my truck,it says to change the oil "every 2500 miles,or more often under severe service conditions"..
GM probably knew 7 qts was marginal for the diesel and using the same oil filter as a SBC probably didn't do them any justice either..

I order my Rotella T6 (syn-15-40) through WalMart or OReilly on line.. cheapest I’ve found it

My 6.2 leaks so I use the Tech 2000 Walmart 15W-40 ,that sells for just under $10 a gallon at the Walmart close to me..
It is likely Quaker State or Warren Oil brand,or maybe Valvoline,Walmart just re-labels it..have not had any problems using it over 15 years..

That is about all I buy there,I did buy two of their cheapest group 78 batteries back in November though...time will tell if two $50 batteries will last thru the winter...so far so good, despite the truck sitting weeks at a time often lately..
I may have to buy some new boots there though,my current ones have soles that litteraly disintigrated ,I must have stepped in something that eats the china rubber..:(..just about all the "good shoe" stores have either gone belly up or are closed here now..
