The Blazer has the oil cap and tube up front in the same place as Big Ugly. Big Ugly, as the sig says, is a '86 and has the J-code engine.

Big Ugly has one of those hand grenade sized oil caps with the vents and such. Sorry, no pictures right now. It's not just the flat little thing that sorta looks like a radiator cap.

The Blazer has the flat little oil cap looking thing like I remember from my older GM's - all of which were gas vehicles. Looks a bit odd sitting up there at the front of the engine on the oil tube. Just wondering if it's supposed to be there or did someone do an el cheapo switcheroo?

Lastly, what's the purpose of the vented cap like Big Ugly has?

It is correct. The civy trucks got that style while the military trucks all got a different style. Although, a lot of the military trucks ended up with the civy cap after a while if one got lost or broken.
