Oil Capacity??

Sorry for the dumb question guys but can anyone tell me what the oil capacity should be for a 75 454?

I searched the forms and most said about 7 quarts, but I changed my oil yesterday and it took me 9 quarts before is was reading full.

I have no idea what the previous owner has done to this truck and I just don't want to hurt anything by running to much oil.

Yup, it should be right around 7 quarts, unless the previous owner installed a higher capacity oil pan.

Did you pay any attention to how much came out? I put my used oil into gallon containers to take to Autozone, so its easy to tell.

No I didn't pay attention to how much came out, but I still have the container, so maybe I will poor it into gallon jugs so that I can see how much came out.
Is there any easy way to tell if I have a higher capacity oil pan, or if maybe I have the wrong dip stick

Did you use one of the 2 quart truck filters?
Do you have an engine oil cooler??

I did not use one of the 2 quart truck filters, infact until I started searching the forums yesterday I didnt' know they existed

I don't know if I have an oil cooler or not, I do have a small cooler mounted to the front of the radiator but I just assumed that it was a tranny cooler. I guess that I need to go out and see if the cooler is for oil or the tranny.
