Ok so I just did an oil change on my 72 k5. It has a moroso 7 qt pan. So after changing the oil filter and draining the oil, I added 7 new qts of oil. Everything looked fine, started the motor and oil pressure was good. Then I took it for a spin and returned home. Then I checked the oil again and this time its reads only to the fill line on the dip stick. Some how on the drive I lost about 2-3 qts of oil. I checked under and everything was dry, no leaks. So I let the truck sit over night and checked it again this morning. Still oil level is at the bottom line (fill). Anybody got any suggestions on what to do, or what happened?
Thanks

i think u might have miss counted or something man if ur oil low that quick u would know something was wrong it would run like crap or be coverd in oil i sugest fill it up and drive it and check it again

thats what I was thinking, however the truck ran fine, oil pressure was norm. I mean there are 7 empty cans of oil in the trash. just dosent add up. should I drain it, repeat the process all over?

How big of a filter did you put on there? My 81 K5 has a large 2 quart oil filter on it, and the guy at Wal-Mart (mom paid for it) put five quarts in and suggested that I have a problem. No dummy, put another quart in.

the oil filter is a purolator oil filter #L34631. I am pretty sure it is a 1 qt filter. It was the same size as the old filter that I removed. I tried looking it up online but couldnt find anything. Got any other ideas?

Scott, are you sure the dipstick is matched to the oil pan? A 7qt pan can sometimes require a different dipstick to read correctly, plus the lifters, valves, cam and other internals are gonna retain oil after you start it the first time. If it was mine I would just add oil until it's full and then go romp on it.... ofcourse I've got a tired old 350 and you're sporting a HT383.

By the way, you should see the roll cage that's going in mine, Precison Welding in Oroville does sick work.

I was gonna ask the same question. I had that problem with mine... Also, is this the first time you have changed the oil with this pan and setup?

7 quart pan plus 1 quart filter...7 empty quart containers. My math says you should be 1 quart low.

this is the first time that I have changed the oil myself on the k5. I had a shop do it a while back and their was no problems after. So I guess I am gonna have to check to make sure the dip stick is the correct size for the pan. I hear what you guys are saying about the oil and the lifters, however i let it sit for a day and then tested it this morning and it still showed only about 4 qts or at the fill line on the stick. Is swapping out dipsticks a pretty easy fix? Also Nate I heard nothing but good things about Precison Welding. A buddy of mine had them fab up a tube frame which turned out pretty bad ass. Nate if you get the time, something I would love to check out the custom tire currier that you had made. I thinking about having one built soon.

this may seem like a simple answer, so i needed to pour a total of 8 qt? I thought 7 would include motor(5) moroso pan(2). Ok so how come when after I topped off the oil before the drive, the stick read full. Then after the drive is when I went down hill.

Ok, if you have a 7 qt. pan and a 1 qt. oil filter then just as Rene said you should be registering 1 qt. low. There is no difference in dipsticks when running a larger oil pan but there is a different oil pump pick-up screen required. What's going to happen is that if you become (usually) 3 qts. low on oil then your dipstick will no longer register anything but you will still have 5 qts. of oil (assuming you put the 8th qt. of oil in to make it read full now) in the pan.

Unless you poured a qt. of oil in the filter before you installed it the oil pump then had to fill that filter with a qt. of oil which now makes your dipstick read 1 qt. short.

Hey you guys thanks for all the knowledge, I will add in another qt tomorrow and see if it reads full. I will also look into the oil pump pick-up screen thing as well. Again thanks you guys

Scott, I'll give you a call in a couple of weeks when I get it back. I just ordered seats and harnesses, they should have the whole thing tacked in the next couple of weeks for the final inspection and then they'll remove it, finish the welds and paint it. It fits under the STC soft top, maybe it will give you some ideas for your rig.

Nate

Dude I cant wait to see your rig, you have done so much to it. Ok so I added another qt of oil (number 8) in today and it topped off at full. Test drove it and everything checked out. Again thanks for the insight.

Glad it worked out.

I once accidentally overfilled my old 355. Dipstick didn't seat completely when I checked it and I added another quart. Couldn't figure out why it seemed to run funny and was burning oil all of a sudden. Drained the extra quart and all was fine again.

My 6.2 diesel will take 8 if I use the 2 quart filter...
