I'm in Spain on a road trip with my '89 K5 and have an issue.

I have an oil leak and it looks like it's coming from the oil cooler adaptor. It's where the oil filter is screwed on to.

I need to get the right part (GM 88893990), but unable to find it in Spain. And not able to get parts ordered/delivered, as I don't have an address while on the road trip.

So the question is, how could I fix this until I get back home (NL) in a few months.

There are two things in that kit. A rubber ring and a gasket.

Could I replace both with something like a liquid seal gasket maker?
Or would that cause other issues, like the liquid gasket leaking into the engine?

Other ideas welcome!

Some times you can use an oil filter o ring to replace a bad one in the adapter. Just depends on the size. Not sure how many different sbc oil filters are available where you are, you can look.

Cheers Wes,

From what I see, there are two types. A 90 degree one on later models, and one that goes straight down, where the filter is facing the ground.

Mine is the latter, like this one... YouTube

I'm carrying a spare oil filer. But I don't want to start pulling things apart, as I'm drivable as long as I check and fill if needed, so want to see what options I have first.

But will check the filter gasket size when I pull it out.

Always good to carry tools and some parts. Actually 1/3 of my truck on this trip is tools and parts. Hahahaha!

That is the same cooler adapter I am using.

the one on the right is GM. The left is Derale aftermarket with 180° bi metallic spring to open a port to external cooler. I could not get it to seal to the block.

I'm 98% sure it's the one on the right due to the size.

The weather sucks right now, but day after tomorrow, I'll be under the truck to check everything before I decide what's best.

I also found some cork gasket sheets that could possibly work for the smaller internal gasket.

Nice! I'll check that when I'm back. But for now I'm trying to find a solution while I'm on the road, as I can't get anything delivered as I have no address right now.
If the oil leak is not too bad and you can check it daily and top off if necessary, I suggest you wait till you're home. If it's bad enough that it could lose the oil in one day then you have to do something now

Yeah, that's the plan for now. I had an issue where I was going up a mountain (not steep, just high!) and when I got to the top I checked the oil and it was REALLY low. But I'm sure I checked it the previous day.

But will keep an eye of it for sure!

Today I checked again before setting off and it looks fine. Will check again tomorrow after a drive.

A leak always gets worse under harsh conditions. Try to baby it

The paper top gasket is not a big deal to make you could use a cereal box for that. It's the o ring that is important. you could try just removing the oil filter temporally and tighten the bolts, this may slow if not stop the leak.

Aha good tip! Will try the bolts first and see how that goes.

Your step is the same as my Wife step, while I play footman.

If you zoom in on my suburban you can see it on the ground. K5devil's K5 in for ground on right.

How does camping in Spain work. Open land? Owner permission ? Pay to stay?

I may be short, but not 'woman' that short!!! :D

Nice trucks man! I want to 2" raise mine at some point.

Hell I am vertically challenged as well. No burn intented, just noticed we have same HF folding step stool in our equipment.
Don't think I have ever seen the top of my burb

I go up there to deploy the solar panel, and spare tyre (if/when needed) ;-)

Sorry, missed this :-|

The law says you can sleep in your car pretty much anywhere, you just can't 'camp'. Which means nothing outside of the vehicle. Chair, tables etc.

But I don't do any of that unless I'm totally out of the way in the mountains. No one comes up there or bothers you if you're not taking the piss.

Pretty chill.

Right now, I'm on the beach with mountain behind me!

Better than here.
My buddy lives the van life here and everywhere he goes somehow at night when he finally falls asleep a cop will find him and wake him to leave.
He never puts anything out and he's very discreet.
He would love traveling in Europe if that's the case.
I know when I was in France, I heard you could be at a rest area up to 3 days, that's a lot better than here where it used to be one day, then down to 8 hours and now here in California it's 6 hours max.

Europe isn't all synced when it comes to 'camping/living' in your vehicle. France is probably the best as they have infrastructure like you mentioned. And it really does depend on where you are in said country.

Spain is HUGE and most of it is not used in anyway. So it's WAY easier to find places, especially inland. And off-season (now) is the best time to do it.
